A b o u t A lfalfa.
After a thorough investigation the
S. P. company believe* that the dairy
industry of the Willamette Valley can
be made more profitable, and the pro
duction greatly increased, through the
growing of alfalfa.
While many attempts have been
made in the valley to grow alfalfa, and
in some places with commercial suc
cess, yet the valley can hardly be class
ed as a producer of alfalfa as a crop.
Therefore the Southern Pacific Com
pany proposes, in different part*of the
Willamette Valley, to plant 20 or more
tracts in alfalfa and endeavor to culti
vate it successfully.
The object to be attained is, first, to
determine under what conditions and
in what sections of the valley alfalfa
can lie grown successfully; and second,
to give a* wide publicity as possible to
the results attained, that farmers in
terested may have the value of their
experience where desire«!.
Mr. W. \V. Cotton, who has had
much practical experience in alfalfa
culture, is preparing a pamphlet upon
this subject. If any of our readers are
interested, Mr Cotton’s phamplet will
!>e mailed to anyone sending his ad
dress to Mr. Paul Slump, Worcester
Building, Portland, Oregon.
The market for dairy products is
practically unlimited so far as Oregon
is concerned, since condensed milk,
butter and rheese can now easily be
transported for long distances. The
movement of butter and cheese during
the 12 months ending June 30th last
from Puget Sound to Alaska amounted
i to 1,339,000 jamnds.
