THE SPOKESMAN • TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2022 A3 RECORDS / COMMUNITY LocalNews Westside Taco Co. damaged by fire — again BY NICOLE ROGERS For the Redmond Spokesman A fire destroyed the Westside Taco Co. food truck Oct. 3, marking the sec- ond time in less than a year that the business had been damaged by a blaze. Firefighters received a call at 10:57 p.m. from a passerby who saw flames coming from the food truck, lo- cated at 245 SW Sixth, in the courtyard of the Kobold taphouse. Redmond Fire Chief Tom Mooney said crews arrived on scene just five minutes later. Mooney said that the fire’s cause has not been determined. He said there were “too many potential igni- tion sources” in the kitchen to iden- tify a specific one. Amber Amos, who owns Westside Taco with her husband Aaron Notar- ianni, said the cart is “totaled.” She hasn’t been able to go inside to assess the damage, but she estimates the cost to rebuild could be $40,000-$50,000. The company’s former brick-and- mortar store, located on SW Fifth, was damaged beyond repair by an- other fire back in March. Amber said the couple has another cart that they can cook out of tempo- rarily, but it will take some time before that is ready. She says they can still do some catering jobs using mobile cook- ing equipment, but for now the rest of her employees are out of job. Amos said that it has been a rough year for her and her husband, but she is trying to stay positive. Their goal is to figure out how to rebuild “and be back up and running for this com- munity and everyone that depends on us.” By Nicole Rogers/Redmond Spokesman The Westside Taco Company burned for the second time this year, leaving their downtown Redmond food truck destroyed. Arrests Fri., Sept 30 Nick Rosenberger/Spokesman County Commissioner candidates Patti Adair, left, and Morgan Schmidt debate local issues in a forum at the Redmond Senior Center on Oct. 4 in Redmond. Commissioner candidates spar in Redmond meeting BY NICK ROSENBERGER Redmond Spokesman Deschutes County Commis- sioner candidates Patti Adair and Morgan Schmidt met Oct. 4 at the Redmond Senior Center and squared off to questions submit- ted by the Redmond Rotary, Ki- wanis and Executive Association. The forum saw Schmidt, a pastor at the First Presbyte- rian Church of Bend, on the offense — challenging Adair on a variety of her stances and actions since becoming a county commissioner in 2018. These included her response to COVID-19, perspectives on land use and hesitancy toward psilocybin treatment. Adair, meanwhile, defended her posi- tions by emphasizing her pro- fessional experience. Topics included the use of American Rescue Plan funds, the lack of child care in De- schutes County, PERS, drought, housing and public safety. Can- didates had one minute to re- spond to each question. Much of the forum focused on the candidate’s abilities to deal with county funds and ideas for more affordable housing. On housing, Adair empha- sized her participation in Hab- itat for Humanity and said she worked on a plan to build a 57-acre manufactured home park plan north of Bend that Senator Tim Knopp presented. She added that the plan was dropped, likely in the Legisla- ture. “(Commissioners) really ap- preciate the housing crisis and we are trying to do exactly ev- erything we can,” she said. Schmidt mentioned that the county needed to work better with cities, like Redmond, to bring more types of affordable housing. “I don’t think the answer is a far-fetched idea dependent on a legislative exception for 57 acres of sprawl into our rural areas,” Schmidt said. When asked how they’d man- age the county’s ever expand- ing budget amid rapid growth, Adair spoke about how her pro- fessional experience as an ac- countant had proved beneficial for her role in the commission — watching out for dollars and trying to spend as carefully as possible. She said they’d just started a pilot project to build more than 300 single-wide homes north of Bend and that her other project is to get rid of “those flammable ... water-sucking junipers.” Schmidt, meanwhile, said she was aware of Adair’s back- ground as a CPA but added that she hasn’t had any fines from the Secretary of State’s of- fice while Adair had been fined $700 for misreporting funds. Schmidt later mentioned that Adair cut taxes while trying to expand some social services such as the county’s response to homelessness. In response to questions about drought, Schmidt said that Deschutes County has an- tiquated water laws that aren’t serving the new reality of cli- mate change. She said the com- mission needs to be proactive in water use and cognizant of land- use decisions. █ 10:08 a.m. NW 6th St. Arrested: Danielle Elizabeth Moss, 35, Redmond.
