10-acre fire burns outbuildings
By Spokesman staff
A brushfire that burned the
western edge of Redmond Aug.
31 was contained later that eve-
ning, after growing to roughly
ten acres and damaging farm-
land and a few outbuildings.
“Most important thing is there
were no injuries and no residen-
tial structures lost,” said Tom
Mooney, fire marshal for Red-
mond Fire & Rescue.
According to Mooney, the
initial call came in at 2:50 p.m.
about a fire in a field in the 4700
block of SW Obsidian Ave.
“The thing we had working
against us was the wind and high
temperatures,” he said. “That
field was primed and ready to
go.”
The cause of the fire has been
classified as “undetermined,”
meaning officials don’t have
enough data to come to a conclu-
sion about the ignition source.
Mooney said crews responded
from the Department of Forestry
and U.S. Forest Service, Bend,
La Pine, Crooked River Ranch,
Warm Springs, Cloverdale,
Camp Sherman, Black Butte and
Crook County.
Mooney said so many crews
were brought in because of wor-
ries that winds and high tem-
peratures could endanger homes
in the area of west Redmond. Air
support was on standby but was
not used.
Mooney said crews “got a
quick attack on it” which helped
them get the blaze under control
in about two hours. Crews re-
mained on scene throughout the
evening, mopping up hot spots.
The fire, which was only about
three miles from city hall, caused
a “go now” evacuation for those
living along SW Obsidian Ave.,
west of SW Helmoltz Way and
east of 58th St.
In April, the city implemented
a new opening burning ordi-
nance that forbids openly burn-
ing debris within city limits. As
the city expands, Mooney said,
the ordinance will expand with
it.
Mooney recommended peo-
ple revisit what evacuation levels
mean and have a plan in place
for fire season. When a “go now”
evacuation goes live, it’s not the
time to plan, he said. It’s the time
to get in your car and go.
