Crews stop brush fire at Crooked River Ranch
BY TIM TRAINOR
Redmond Spokesman
Fire crews stopped a brush
fire Tuesday, July 19, that
threatened numerous homes
in Crooked River Ranch near
the intersection of SW Cin-
der and SW Peninsula drives.
According to Crooked
River Ranch Fire and Res-
cue, the blaze was burning in
grass, brush and juniper trees
near several residences, even-
tually reaching several stacks
of lumber and a horse trailer
outside a home in the 12600
block of SW Cinder.
The fire, which was first
reported about 3:20 p.m. on
July 19, was declared con-
tained at about .33 acres
about 30 minutes later. Crews
remained on-scene mop-
ping up and building fireline
around hot spots until nearly
6 p.m., according to CRRFR.
Six engines and 17 firefight-
ers responded, including mu-
tual aid from Redmond Fire
& Rescue, Bureau of Land
Management, Oregon State
Fire Marshal’s Office and Jef-
ferson County Sheriff ’s Of-
fice.
The cause of the fire is un-
der investigation.

July 30, 1997 — Stations
wage gas price war
Price wars at gas stations
are a rarity anymore, but one
seems to have erupted in Red-
mond and Bend.
Owners of several local
stations have cut prices from
around $1.30 a gallon to $1.20
or less. Some recently posted
$1.18 a gallon — a price not
common in Central Oregon
for years.
The first volley was fired
by Ron LaFranchi, who con-
verted the Fast Gas station to
an Exxon on S. Highway 97
in Redmond. He completed
a similar renovation in Bend,
then lowered prices at both
stations last week.
Other stations followed suit
over the weekend and earlier
this week.
