June 1, 1922 — From ‘Lo-
cal happenings’
Ed Luthey and family were
among the money from Pow-
ell Butte to come to Redmond
last Sunday. Mr. Luthey was
looking for a man to work on
his ranch, but was unable to
locate one here, owing to the
fact that Redmond has no one
on the unemployed list.
June 5, 1947 — Grange de-
grees on slate tonight
The colorful rituals of the
fifth and sixth degree will be
given tonight in Bend at the an-
nual convention of the Oregon
State Grange, which opened
there Monday, and an address
by Governor Earl Snell, sched-
uled for Friday afternoon at 3
o’clock will be the concluding
feature of the session.
The convention, very well
attended, has already handled
a large volume of business, and
the many committee meetings
and general conferences are
reaching their final objectives.
Honor of being elected mas-
ter of the state juvenile grange
for the coming year has been
conferred upon Jenny Lee
Wood, of Pine Forest Grange,
and another Central Oregon
girl, Ellen Stacy, of Redmond
Grange, has been elected over-
seer of the organization.
The fifth degree will be ex-
emplified by the Deschutes
County Pomona degree team at
Bend High School this evening
at 8 o’clock, and the sixth degree
by the state officer at 9 o’clock.

June 4, 1997 — City un-
veils new street plan
Each weekday after school
lets out, students make their
way home along some nar-
row and very busy routes —
streets such as Quartz Avenue
in southwest Redmond.
Although parts of Quartz
look like a lazy country lane,
the city considers it a collector
— or one of the main streets
for funneling traffic around
town.
Parents are worried about
cars speeding down the street
when children are present,
and at least one has erected a
homemade sign alerting driv-
ers of the danger.
The city knows Quartz is
a problem spot, and a pro-
posed revision of Redmond‘s
transportation plan outlines
measures to make it safer. But
the plan also calls for an ex-
tension of Quartz east across
Highway 97, linking it directly
to Redmond‘s airport.
The project is intended to
improve east-west travel, but
it also will put many more
cars on that street.
