Increasing diversity in the teacher ranks
PET OF THE WEEK
school districts, for example — to diver-
sify the teacher workforce and eliminate
barriers that prevent teachers from diverse
backgrounds from carving pathways in
education.
Right now, about 24% of Redmond
School District’s student population iden-
tifies as people of color. Approximately 6%
of our teachers and administrators identify
as such. We’d like our district’s workforce
to look more like our student population
— it’s a benefit to students when they see
teachers who look like them and who may
have shared life experiences.
The goal of the grant is to increase the
diversity in our educator group, and in or-
der to do that, Redmond’s grant funding
will be used to support existing teachers of
color furthering their education — helping
pay for tuition, licensure and other costs to
obtain a master’s degree.
The funds will also provide opportuni-
ties for classified employees to obtain their
teaching degrees. And in order to encour-
age more diverse teachers in the pipeline,
the district plans to create a cadet program
with Central Oregon Community College
Meet Rian! Rian is a 5-6 month old kitten look-
ing for a forever home. He arrived as a stray and was
never claimed. Rian is very social, loves to cuddle,
and enjoys playing with his favorite toys. He would
make a great family cat. Rian tested positive for Fe-
line Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and must be in-
door only and the only cat in the home or live with
other FIV+ cats. For more info, call BrightSide Ani-
mal Center at 541-923-0882.

A
teacher shortage has quietly taken
root around the country, and the
COVID-19 pandemic sure hasn’t
helped that ongoing issue. We value our
teachers, and we know having great teach-
ers who love what they
do and who are highly
skilled are a vital part of a
successful school district.
We have great teach-
ers, and we want more
of them. As a step along
that path, this year the

Oregon Department of
Education and the Ed-
ucator Advancement Council awarded
grants of nearly $7 million to 26 school
districts, community colleges and univer-
sities around Oregon. In Central Oregon,
the High Desert Education Service District
received funds to benefit the Redmond
School District, as well as Sisters and
Crook County schools.
The grant seeks to help regional and lo-
cal partnerships — between colleges and
“Helping people who live in this
community grow and become future
teachers and leaders of the Redmond
School District is good for our students
and good for our schools.”
— Redmond Superintendent Charan Cline
for high schoolers interested in the teach-
ing profession, and a mentor program that
will support them.
“Helping people who live in this com-
munity grow and become future teachers
and leaders of the Redmond School Dis-
trict is good for our students and good for
our schools,” Superintendent Charan Cline
said. “We want a diverse workforce that is
committed to the long-term social health
of our community.”
The district believes that by removing
financial and other barriers for individuals
of color who want to be teachers, we can
soon have that diverse workforce we seek,
and our students will benefit.
NEWS BRIEFING
More than $13,000 worth of tools stolen
at Sisters equipment rental store
Three people arrested in connection
to Circle K robbery, stabbing
More than $13,000 in equipment was sto-
len from the Sisters Rental equipment store
Wednesday night, and Deschutes County Sher-
iff’s Office deputies are searching for two men.
Deputies went to the site of the burglary
Thursday morning and were told two men
broke through the store’s glass door and stole
chain saws and a concrete saw, according to a
sheriff’s office press release.
The press release said authorities are looking
for two Latino men in their late 20s to early 30s,
and states that the pair allegedly drove a newer
white Honda Civic with unknown license plates
to the scene. The two men wore masks during
the burglary, the release states.
If you have information about the burglary,
deputies are encouraging the public to call the
sheriff’s office at 541-693-6911.
Three people were arrested Saturday night
in connection to a robbery and stabbing at the
Chevron Circle K on U.S. Highway 97 earlier
in the day, Redmond Police said in a prepared
statement.
Abraham Sandoval Ruiz, 24, of Central Ore-
gon; Brandon Petri, 21, of Bend; and Meahgan
Webb, 31, of Madras, are being held at the De-
schutes County jail, police said.
Police say the three suspects entered the Cir-
cle K about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, each wearing
masks. They attempted to reach the cash register
and one of them stabbed an employee multi-
ple times, police said. The employee, a 27-year-
old Redmond woman, was transported to St.
Charles Redmond with serious injuries. Police
said Sunday she was recovering.
Police were told about 9:35 p.m. Saturday

Walmart. When approached by police, the sus-
pects drove off, leading officers on a chase.
Officers used tire deflating devices to slow the
suspects, who had driven south on Highway 97
before turning west onto SW Tomahawk Ave-
nue. Their car became disabled in a field, where
officers arrested the three suspects.
The suspects face an array of charges, includ-
ing first-degree robbery and first degree assault,
police said.
