By the tim e the workmen get through im proving 6th street Redmond will have one of the best public thoroughfares in C entral Oregon. But it will take lots of work to do it. Crook county and C entral Oregon got about all they desired in the way of recognition of th eir irrigation projects at the ses sion of the Oregon Irrigation Congress in Portland last week. A city park for Redmond is one of the new features the Com mercial Club is working on. This would be a boon to the citizens and others coming to town, and it is hoped the proposition can be worked out and the park completed for the coming sum m er. The Monday noon luncheons of the Redmond Commercial Club are becoming very popular, and the attendance at them is increasing. The “feed” put up at the different places for the club is of the best, and no one has cause fo r kicking because of not gettin g enough to eat. Railroad companies do not seem to find money tight. The Canadian Pacific Railway is going to expend 100 million dollars in 1914 for betterm ent of its road and extensions, and several roads in the I'n ited S tates are going to expend money way up in the millions for im provem ents. Two and one-fourth cents is w hat the Portland Railway, Light & Power Co. charges M ultnomah county per kilow att hour for electricity fo r light and power. This is a p retty low rate, and will be the m eans of saving the county a large sum over the prices they have paid in form er years. Some people are wondering why th eir taxes are so high this year. The Spokesman has no solution of the problem. T axa tion is a peculiar institution the way it is conducted and m anaged a t present. The person w ith small property holdings alw ays is the one who pays more in proportion than the large property owner. If all paid th e ir ju st proportion of taxes then taxation would not be a burden. But they don’t, and th ere you are. RKPMONP \ P V I t r E I . IS »Si l> K X T K X I 'W » Ol.l \o»»»|w»i»or».
