Not m any of them are in the new spaper business, however. In fact, only m ighty few of the successful kind are in the business. The oth ers have been too busy in holding up brick buildings or holding down dry goods boxes, or a t divers o th er jobs, to get into the newspaper game. But they all know ju s t how it should be done, and none of those who are doing it ever get it ju s t th a t way. Therefore, it is never done rig h t. “ No newspaper, according to the fellows who have been too busy to run one them selves, should ever express an opinion in which they as readers, and possibly subscribers, do not concur. But the trouble is, there are 5000 readers, w ith 5000 thinks, each think of a different brand, who know ju st w hat the paper ought to say and ju s t w hat it ought to do, and unfortunately none of them quite agree with the one or two deluded m ortals who, probably unable to m ake a living carrying the hod or breaking rock, o r following the o th er peaceful and respectable paths of duty, are try in g to run a paper “ Did you ever stop to think ju st how absurd the position of some of these critics is? asks the Rogue River Courier. The new spaper is a quasi-public institution. So also is the grocery store, the pharm acy, the blacksm ith shop and the hotel a quasi public institution. Did you ever try to put the hotel out of busi ness because a t one or two or more meals it had som ething upon its menu th a t did not appeal to your appetite or agree with your digestion? Probably not. B ut it was your privilege, and you were w ithin your rig h ts in exercising it if you wshed, to quit the hotel and try another, or to go out in the back yard and eat worms. The hotel will continue to run, however, and possibly its patronage may increase on ju s t the culinary policy th a t you did not like. “ And so with th e new spaper.
