The United States District For
ester's office ha* received an allot
ment of $22,380.29. which Is ten
per cent of the national forest rev
enue collected In Oregon. The en
tire sum is to be expended on wagon
roads In government forests of Ore
gon. Some of the new roads will
open country which heretofore has
been practically untraveraed.
Five thousand dollars of this
sum will be used to Improve the
McKenzie wagon road, one of the
four roads connecting the eastern
and western parts of the state. The
McKenzie road is one of the most
perilous In the state, several lives
having been lost on it. Last year
I $1,250 was spent on It.
This is the second year an ap
propriation for such purpose ha»
been made by the government, and
federal officials predict that within
the next few years, when the de
mand for timber in the national for
ests increases, the appropriation
easily will reach the $100,000 mark
The following other roads or
routes will also be improved as the
result of the allotment:
Bend
Sparks
l.ake,
I’alsley-Chewaiican.
Murderers
Creek-Sprouls
Ranch.
Cove - Mlnam.
Prlnevllle - Mitchell.
Gates-Portsvllle, Cape I’erpetua. l*-h
man Springs, Tiller (from Tiller
postoffice eastward), Rock Crock-
North Umpqua, Grouse Creek and
Desolation.
While the roads will not be hard
surfaced, it Is the purpose of govern
ment officials to build and route
them so that they will represent a
basis for permanent highways after
the regions about them are opened
the rase of the State of Oregon vs
William Carey The efficient service
rendered by the officers In running
down the evidence, mad« possltile by
the county automobile standing
ready, haa In Itaelf, In our opinion,
rendered the Investment for the ma
chine so valuable that if no oth«.'
service were had hereafter, the pur
chase would be Justified
We further feel that the coutity
court should psy the bills for gaao
line, lubricating oil and repairs, for
the machine without gasoline, lubri
cating oil and repairs I* useless and
the Investment a complete loss, anu
we ran see no reason absolutely for
the court to refuse to pay bills legiti
mately incurred in the service of the
county.
Further, we desire to say that we
have examined the assessment roll*
upon which the 1913 taxes will be
collected and upon which the next
levy will he made and we wish to
say that the valuation* a* we have
found them seem to he uniform and
that the assessor has worked dili
gently and well at a task that is al
ways a difficult one in w hich to pinnae
and that we are highly satisfied in
the manner In which assessment* for
the next levy seem to huve been
made.
From observations made l»y us. we
find that the roof of the court house
Is In a very had state of repair and
we hereby call the attention of the
county court, now In session, to that
fact
We believe the roof needs Im
mediate attention and should regu
larly be painted and repaired, for so
valuable a building as the Crook
county court house cannot be allowed
to be ruined so vitally as It Is llkeiv
to be by a defective or unrepaired
roof.
In conclusion we wish further to
thank all the county officials, the
district attorney, his deputy and our
bailiff for the courtesies shown us
at all times and In the assistance ren
dered to us In the performance of
0,1 r duties. Our labor has been ren
dered more pleasant and less difficult
by their assistance, for which we
desire in this way to express our
gratitude.
Having concluded our labors, we
