The low colonist rates go into e f­
fect March 1st and continue uutil
A pril 15th, and duriug that

It is expeeled »that at least thirty
thousand land seekers will come to
the coast. The objective point o f
most o f these people w ill be Ore­
gon. The central part o f the state,
uud especially the Uedmond
Dis­
trict. which has been well advertis­
ed. w ill receive a goodly share o f
the pew comer*.
Plans to protect colonists
com­
ing to Oregon this season from un­
scrupulous
real estate promoters,
in
every way possible, are being
laid by the Portland
t'oinm ercisl
Club, which la bringing to its as-
sistance every commercial organiza­
tion in the state enrolled
as
a
member in the Oregon Development
League.
A letter has been sent out
from the Portland Commercial Club
to sim ilar organizations throughout
the state, calling attention to the
colonist
day proclamation o f the
governor, which sets aside February
22 and invites citizens o f Oregon to
w rite letters to friends and
news­
papers
in the east urging
upon
them the desirability o f Oregou as
a home and the opportunities open
to all.
Especial stress is laid In the let­
ter on the fact that the proclama­
tion suggests emphasizing that Or-
egou seeks only the class of colo­
nists able to go on to land and la-
able to make good in agricultural
pursuits.
Club to Help Settlors
Almost all o f the colonists
will
go to Portland and w ill viait that
city before going out into the stale
to seek farms. The Portland Com­
mercial Club virtually will be the
agent o f rommerelal eluhs through­
out Oregon In finding places
for
newcomers.
