WANT FARMERS TO RAISE OREGON CORN In the firm belief that corn can be made as profitable in Ore gon if care is taken in the selec tion o f proper varieties. Repre sentative Hawley has taken the matter up with the Secretary o f Agriculture, with the result that the Secretary has sent him the {following request: " I f you will furnish me with the names and addresses o f a few farmers who would be inter ested in experimenting with a few varieties o f corn. 1 will have our office of corn investigations take the matter up w ith them di rectly and arrange with them for testing some o f the earlier varie ties of New England. Minnesota and the l>akotas. Hawley desires the names of farmers in Oregon willing to take up this experiment work, confident that a thorough test will discover one or more o f the ear lier maturing varieties suitable to Oregon's climate. Representative Hawley, as a member o f the House agricultur al committee, has taken a deep interest in securing grains and grasses suitable to Oregon’ s cli mate and soil, and believes this offer o f the secretary must re sult beneficially to the agricul turists of his state. Olcott Gives Pony for Fow l Display Secretary' of State Olcott. be ing interested in the statewide country life education movement inaugurated by the state bank ers' association and State Super intendent Alderman, announced that he would be glad to offer a Shetland pony as a prize for th» child over 12 years o f age who exhibits the best display o f chick ens. Interest is widespread in this movement and over half a hundred fine animals have beer given as prizes. Among those to be won by the boys and girl* o f Oregon are Shetland ponies. Pendleton Indian ponies, thor oughbred calves, pure bred sheep, goats and hogs, and choice strain o f chickens and dogs. Ov er $1000 in cash prizes will also be offered. Dog Acts As Hired Mnn Warren Rice of Solon, Maine, has a shepherd dog that he con siders worth « dollar and a half a day to him. or the price he would have to pay a hired man. says the Kennebec Journal. "T eddy,” the dog, does much o f the work that a hired man would tin. When Mr. Rice goes off to work into the back field, a mile distant. Teddy goes with him. If Mr. Rice is cutting wood, when a tree is down and his master is cutting the limbs from it, Teddy grabs hold o f each ore and as it is cut off pulls it aw ay and runs back to get another limb. When noon time comes his master will say, " Teddy, we had better have dinner,” anti Teddy goes to the house where his mistress has put up the din ner in a pail, and takes it back to the woods. He and his master eat dinner together. Mr. Rice lives back a little way from the main road and when the mail man comes Teddy runs to get the paper and brings it home.
