gathering in what must keep him the whole year

Where can he store it better than in our bank?

TALKED FOR GREATER
COMMERCIAL CLUB
President Jones Urges An
Inereased Member
ship in Club
At the mass meeting Monday
night held in the Commercial
Club Room President H. F. Jones
outlined his ideas as to how a
live, progressive Commercial
Club was the greatest help a city
could have. He urged that every
man in Redmond who has the int
erest of the city at heart, should
join the organization and through
his efforts try to build up the city
and make it the best in Central
Oregon.
The arguments put forward by
the president were pertinent and
to the point, and with the coming
of the railroads into this section
in the spring he advised that the
citizens of Redmond perfect such
an organization that Redmond
would be the slogan for all of
Central Oregon.
Some of the expert trap shoot
ers of Redmond and vicinity,
have been kept guessing lately
where they are at in making
records. All previous records
have been shot to piecies the
past week. Some of the best
shots in the city have been faded
by an amatuer marksman who
set the pace for them. A gun
club will soon be organized here
and arrangements perfected for
an annual meet. The best shots
in the city have signified their
intention of joining the organ
ization and holding an annual
tournament.

A rm n language*, now reaching
from the oast coast of India to the
west coast of the United Slates,
were one tongue in the beginning
of its formation.
The root from which they grew
is “ wagh," and one meaning of it i<
the same as our “ wag." as it signi
fies going from side to » do, to move,
to carry, to pa-s over and turning
from one |>oint to another.
This root hos at the foundation
of our word “ way," whether » e use
it as a road, or path, or distance, or
direction. It is what wo move over,
or the direction a e move, or the
distance we move, hvoo if " c want
our own “ way,” it is the manner in
which we see tit to move. In our
“ wagon” it is the tiling that m o m
and in the dog s tad the sort of
motion.
• All similar words come to our
Knglisli more directly through the
Teutonic base “ wega,’ which means
both a wav and to wag. When the
root went into the Sanskrit the “ w”
got the
sound, so our Hast In
dian brothers say “ vuh” for carry
and call a road vehicle aud a horse
all “ vaha.”
In ’the laitin it became “ via.’
which we use for way nnd through
which we get our “ viaduct” and
“ vehicle.”
In a!l of the words in all of the
various
languages
into
which
“ wagli” lias gone there is always the
idea of the thing that moves, the
path over which it moves or the
manner of its motiou.—New X ork

E ve’s Apple Tree.
A fruit suppo-od lo lioar the
mark of I’ve’» teeth is one of the
many botanical curiosities of Cey
lon. The tree on which it grows is
known by the significant name of
“ the forbidden fruit,” or “ Kve’s ap
ple tree.” The btoisoni bus a very
plea-ant scent, but the really re
markable feature of the tree, the
one to which it owe* it* name, is
the fruit. It is beautiful and hangs
from the tree in a [»eeulinr manner.
Orange on the outside and deep
crimson within, cadi fruit lias the
appearance of having had a piece
bitten out of it. This fact, togeth
er with its poisonous quality, led
the Mohammedans to represent it
a* the forbiddeu fruit of the garden
of Eden and to warn men again-1
its noxious properties.

quite a commotion by saving that

An Egg Test.
Plared in a bowl of water an egg
if fresh will remain re.-ting at the
bottom of the vessel; if not quite
fresh it will rest with the big end
raised higher than the small end,
and the higher the big end is raised
the older i» the egg. As an egg
get* older, says the Spatula, the
water contained in the white of an
egg evaporates, and this causes the
empty space at the thick end of
every egg to become enlarged. The
larger th a t empty space becomes
the more the egg rises in the water
till in course of time it floats.

Malay Archipalago.
The fruit called mangka in the
Malay archipelago hangs on slmrt
stems and grows directly out of the
thicker woody jwrts of the tree,
which, to begin with, is a surprising
sight to u* north country men.
Often in the leatherlike rind of the
fruit are found hundred* of seeds
about the size of a pigeon’s egg sur
rounded by n not particularly ten
der mesoourp. Many arc the opin
ions about the flavor of ♦ hi* latter.
It seems to me |ieculiar and aro
matic. 'The people of Java and
Mulavsia appear to lx? very fond of
it. judging by the quantities of this
fruit consumed. The wood of the
mangka tree is nbo greatly esteem
ed. The root especially is utilized
for wood carving. At first rather
pule, it later resembles mahogany
in color.— Now York Herald.
