TAX REDUCTION I’O Pl l.AR.
The National Industrial Conference'
Board shows hv a careful survey that
there is nothing more unpopular than
nnv proposition to increase federal
state and local taxes.
This statisticial body shows that
during 1921-23, inclusive, while state
and local taxes increased nearly 15
per cent, federal taxes decreased more
than 27 per cent.
While federal taxes were reduced
$1.009.000.000 in three years, states
ami political subdivisions have been
borrowing ami spending heavily.
In 1919. these subdivisions bor
rowed $691.000.000: in 1923, $1,063,-
000.000; during 1924, over $1,300,-
000.
Correspondingly, state and muni
cipal subdivision taxes have increased
from $2.956.000.000 in 1919 to $4.-
449,000.000 in 1923 and probably will
exceed five billion dollars in 1924.
But the tide has turned and man
