M .r an d M rs. A . P . Sw eat canta up fro m th e ir naw h om e a i The Port of Port Orford has been nhthorixed, and, un less it is knocked out on som e technical point by attorneys em ployed by its em enies, will be organised and wilt accom plish the end for which it was created, nam ely, the build in g of a good, substantial wharf in our harbor- The board of com m issioners that are appointed will have a dual responsibility. First w ill com e' their obliga tion to the, friends of the Port in seeing iba^lOO cents is re alised from every dollar put into it and that a wliarf will be b u ilt as quiokly and as cheaply as it is practical Vo do so. 8ocond com es the obligation of the com m issioners to those who have opposed the Port, w hich lies io a business lik e and conservative handling ¿ f the affairs of the Port that w ill foroe tho oonviction upon each resident of the district that the organization is a thin g that is o f personal benefit to him , and also, in keeping the pre-election pledge that the wharf shall n<?t costjm oie than $25,000. Of course, if those who are fighting the Port eatise the com m ission to contract attorney fees in defending the or ganization, thia could not be oounted as a part of the cost of the wharf but should be provided lor by a special tax upon the district. It is learned upon good authority that those who are trying to obstruct the creation of thia Port D istrict intend to carry the fight in to the courts. It is not hard to under stand why som e outside interests are fighting th is project, but it is herd to understand how any good citizen living w ithin the district can reconcile bis conscience to the con tinuation of a fight that is now trying to over-throw the w ish es of a m ajority of the people. Our Republican form o f governm ent is based upon m ajority rule, and to attem pt to do away with th is is un- Am erican, especially so when that m ajority is two to one, and has been won w ithout fraud or m is-representation, as in the case of th e Pori of Port Orford. That Port Orford harbor is a bay com ing withiu the m eaning of the Port law, and that it is a water-shed, end that sm alt streams not flowing into havigahlk bays or riv, art m ay be included in the Port District, was decided in th e action brought against the former Port at this place. A nd those living within the present district and are help in g to keep up the fight against it, ih o u ld ^ m em b er that th ey are but creating needless expense that they them selves v ________ ■_ m u st help to bear. ini» the la tte r p art of Lang last week. buaine»«.
