Treasure hunting cantinata ta occupy* tbe attention of many peo ple in vari >ua parta of the world. A hoard of buried wealth oat as well known aa certain others is that supposed ta hare been se creted by Lobtteaia, king of the Matabcle in HafVi Africa, before be met his death at the hands of the British. This treasure is said to consist of gold, ivory and pre cious stones. It was brought into the limelight of public notice not long ago by the arrest of a IJntch- ntan named John Jacobs. He a r rived at Bulawayo, told some thing of bis plans, was pot into what they call the “goal” and has since been deported. Lobengula succeeded his father' as king of the Matabele in 1870 and boldly opposed European civ ilisation. He made Bulawayo his capital. A fter the discovery of gold in bis territory In 1873, Por tugal, the Transvaal and Great Britain strove to win the supreme control over Ixvbengula'» king dom. In 1888 be signed a treaty with Great Britain, admitting her suzerainty. In 1893, provoked by the insolence of the British Boath Africa company, be attacked the English. He was terribly beaten. His capital was taken and in his flight he himself was killed. John Jacobs, the treasure seek er, was a school teacher. He elfiims to have been private secre tary to King Lobengula and that in this way he learned where the treasure was hid. The Bulawayo authorities, however, discovered that he had a bad record. Hence bis deportation. Jacobs is an el derly man, bearing evidence of long exposure to wind and weather. The treasure la still to be found. The two country girls were on a visit to town, and they were en joying themselves Immensely. But somehow there seemed to be a conflict of ideas between them and their hostess. Khe had strict ideas of propriety, and they had appar ently only thought they had. They had determined to show that they wore fu lly up-to-date in social matters, bat,— well, here’s what occurred. —- Two young fellows from their part of the country happened to be in town at the same time, and they invited the girla to go to the theater, with a little supper to- follow. The girls promptly accepted. The hostess in whose charge they were raised lier hands in- horror when she heard of it. “It Will never, do,” she said. “You must be cbii|*eroued on any’ such occasion is that.” “Chaperoned!” exclaimed one of the girls. “Why, of course we’ll be chaperoned.
