NEITHER BOUGHT NOR SUBSIDIZED.
An item appeared in several of the state papers last
week to the effect that the T ribune had been sold. W hile
this was erroneous, yet its publication, together with a ru
mor that had been going around to that effect, has given
rise to the b elief in some quarters that tliidf paper, if not
bought outrijthtjja^ t least controlled by certain interests.
This article is written for the purpoae <tf «taring em
phatically that there ate no strings wlt.TRfv&P on rite T r i
bune . The plant is owned exclusively by the writer, and
the editorial matter appearing in these oalom n s is at least
honest, and is absolutely free from nodfrfe? fiflutettoe front
whatsoever souçpe. We have taken not a little pride in
the b e t that during the thirteen years we have owned tho
paper not oneo has the T ribijnb expressed au opinion for
hire— one in which the writer did n o t cou eeien tiou sly be
lieve.
*
.
O pinions, however, may err, and if fairly and honestly
taken, are subject to change. And the changing of one
o f these opinions, after watching tha situation .several
years, relative to the fishing situation on Rogue river, w ill,
we believe, before the next election convince those who
m ight be skeptical at this tim e that the T ribute is a free
agent, ready at any tim e to espouse what it believes to be
the causo o f the people against special privilege..
Orford boys a t H onolulu, show ing som ething of what that
great organization, the Voting Mens Christian' Association^
is doing in the Sandwich Islands.
'
It m atters not whether it is at the training cam ps at
home, or behind the battle lines in France, or in our island
possessions, wherever the Am erican sailor and soldier
there also is the Y, M. C. A. throw ing around our boys
a hom e atmosphere and the o n ly refining influence thoy are
to know w hile engaged in a b r u la lix iu g w o rk .
1
And the Y. M. p; A . doe? not confine its work: behind-
o u r lines buVhgs received pecuiiskion- from t h e ’ ^»ermkh
governm ent to go in the prison cam ps there on its*m ission
o f mercy. And there allied prisoners havo gone m jd by,
the score because o f th e hardships and ratoaotojkfr and
there oar American boys are already finding their way.
The man who can afford to contribute to the Y. M, C.
A . and does not do so is either ignorant of the great work
i t is d oin g or else is lack ing in the spirit and finer sensibil-
ities that m ake a good Am erican. And if his talk i$ such
a s t o keep others from helping, then he becomes a positive
m enace to the welfare of oar boys who are giving their a ll
in our stead, and becom es an undesirable citizen in any
patriotic com m unity in tim es lik e these.
