The dramatic company waa
stranded in a smalt Nety England
town, hopelessly stranded. Tim
manager had gone with the insig
nifleant receipts of thie last per
formance. The costumes aud ac
cessories were in the hunds of
ereditors. It fell on the lendiug
man to get the company out o f the
hole by arranging some sort of a
benefit, relates the New York
Tribune.
He finally found a ladies’ ah'
society of one of the churches to
take the management of a per
centage perfaiftn'tnve.
A ll went
well until they asked the name of
the play. Now “Camille” wat, tip*
only play the company could give
without costumes, aud “Camille”
wna the leading man'» answer.
There waa much grave shaking of
heads and the ladies’ aid waa
rucked with doubts. Finally they
gave their consent, aud a re
hearsal was ordered. .
“W e will have tu have a bed for
the lady to die on,” the leading
man explained to the women who
were helping him at the opera
iionso.
“A bed!” thpy cried. “A be«|on
the public platform!’’ Though h«
explained that a bed was needed
for the death aeenc. they insisted
on substituting a feoucB. ApaK
they said, was not proper in a pub
lie play.
“Just think of H.” said the Wad
ing man, when he told the story
the other day on Broadway.
“They swallowed ‘Camille,’ hut
they would not stand for a bed.”
