T o u rists who have stopped a t H a w a ii or Hamoa m ay recall the lace b ark clo thin g of the natives— clo th in g of a neat brown color when new, o f re m a rk able stren gth and o f a fra g ra n t odor, like fre sh ly cured tobacco lea f. The n ative tap a cloth, as it is called, is inndc fro m the bark of the hrusonetia p a p irife ra , but it is not u su ally included am ong the real lace-bark trees. In its u a tu ra l s ta te the real lace- bark is of a d elic ate rrea in w h ite tin t. I t is p ro bably a kind of fibrous pith. W h e n the o u te r h ark is removed it can be unfolded and unwound in one seamless piece, having a s h rfa te of a little anorc than a square y a rd .
