of the natives— clo th in g of a neat
brown color when new, o f re m a rk ­
able stren gth and o f a fra g ra n t
odor, like fre sh ly cured tobacco
lea f. The n ative tap a cloth, as it
is called, is inndc fro m the bark
of the hrusonetia p a p irife ra , but
it is not u su ally included am ong
the real lace-bark trees.

bark is of a d elic ate rrea in w h ite

fibrous pith. W h e n the o u te r h ark
is removed it can be unfolded and
