It was interesting to study the walls, that still retain their old time tapestries. From the knoll where Ruthven Hall stands the look down the river shows views of Washington, shrined between in truding hills, tour miles away. The flow of the Potomac, on the west, with beautiful lulls that are stud ded with homes on the east, com plete a scene of wondrous beauty. Coming back in the evening, I »aw on m y car agood looking young woman who seemed as white as the rest, but was attended by a negro. The girl was attractive, well dress ed, well behaved, but possession of a modicum of negro blood made her no better than the blackest. Reviewing the work of Congress, it must be conceded that Oregon comes out with flying colors—and full pockets. No Oregon interest has been neglected; no time when our delegation has been turned down. Our veterans are pensioned and their worth recognized. Oneof the important measures for our state was the irrigation bill, that involves the redeeming of millions of acres in Eastern Oregon that is fertile soil but lacks moisture. Let that part of our siate become productive and it will make us the greatest state in the Pacific northwest. Summing up the work of the session it is evi dent that our state has secured all it could rightfully ask. y 8. A, C lake . Washington, D. C., June 26, 1902. Perhaps the experience of Mr. II. II.
