I f only our Catholic friends would join with us in an effort to see ourselves as others see us, putting themselves in our place, while we in fancy try to put ourselves in their place, the result would be mutual understanding and a basis for the restoration o f friendship and peace. It is a continual grief to most Klansmen to think o f the broken friendships which result from misunderstanding and, from our viewpoint, the Roman Catholics are wholly to blame. They surely realize by this time that their church is in dire need o f reform, that they must Americanize it in every respect and make it safe for the Republic. They must abolish the “ celibacy” o f the^riests and allow them to lead natural lives, o r else require them to be made safe fo r society. The "celibate” priest is a menace, in the opinion o f a vast majority o f the American people, and the system won’t be toler ated in this country much longer. Any good Catholic possessing horse-sense ought to be able to understand this viewpoint and to share the general idem that the “ bachelor” priesthood is a peril o f first magnitude and ought not to be tolerated in a civilized coun try. Thousands o f priests themselves will secretly exclaim “ Am en!” to this comment. They are natural men, most o f them, and they yearn fo r the joys and compensations o f married life; if they did not, they would not be natural men; and it is utter nonsense to claim that they are so godlike that they can throttle, stifle and control their natural human passions and propensities.
