DR. C. S. OGSRURY Hell-Diver” Refined to Figure on Pursuer’s Menu. Curious Sp««d Contort Riporto* hy Naturo Student, Who Witnessed the Incident, on Maine Coast KERN PARK GRAY’S CROSSING LAUGHED AT SEAL Koala are quick of movement, nod anyone who ha* ever watched them feeding cannot but marvel at the speed with which they dart about In the water and the apparent ease with which they are able to overtake their prey, say* a Bulletin of tbe American Game Protective association, and like wise there are few duck huuten* who have not had the opportunity of wlt- neaaing the speed of tbe grebe. com monly known as tbe hell-diver. II* can easily protect himself by diving and swimming under water, and “light ning 1* alow as compared with the «pe.il with which a hell-diver sub merge* when he sees tbo flash of a gun headed in hl* direction.” Which of the two i* quicker in the water become* a nice question, to the discussion of which Arthur L. Penni man contributes the «tory of a con test he witnessed on the Maine coast, In the Penobscot bay region, between ■ seal and a pied-billed grebe, when each contestant was apparently doing his best, “the seal looking for hi* supper and the heU-dlver intent on seeing that he didn’t make up the menu.” “While we were engaged in studying the habits rrf a flsh hawk," Mr. Penni man writes, “our attention was at tracted by a great commotion in the water off shore. From our blind we could see that the splashing was caused by a real performing the most curious antics in bls attempts to catch a bird which we later identified as a pied-billed grebe. “The seal made rapid progress, por poising in and out of the water in quick diving leaps end was fast over hauling the bird, which was s«imming frantically to escape his pursuer, but. however, made no attempt to fly. Af ter a stralght-away race of some fifty yards or more, it seemed as if the chase was over, as both bird and seal disappeared In the same splash as the seal struck the water. When the splash subsided we saw that the grebe had cleverly dodged to one side and, after twisting and turning quickly around a very small circuit to elude the seal. Me headed straight for shore. "The bird now began to use its wings, and. skittering rapidly over the water, soon distanced the seal, which continued the chase until within 30 feet of the beach, where the water Was no more than knee deep. “There he sat with his shoulders out of the water, watching the grebe as the latter ran along the edge of the shore. Then, as though he hated to give up his meal, he slowly pursued the biril on a parallel course in the water, paying not the slightest atten tion to the men on the beach until he was frightened off by our Intervention In the contest” DENTISTRY Lents Station Portland, Oregon Ot-IR DR. In that time he has made 3.800 photomicrographs of snowflakes and has found that no two of them are exactly alike. As a result of his exhaustive study he firmly believes that the snowflake Is the most' exquis ite example of nature’s art. His photographs have been Intro duced into several universities, and have also won a niche in the arts and sciences, as well as being used for designs In artcraft shops and for Jewelry designing.
