The country is beginning to emerge from one of the severest cases of business depression it has experi enced in years—a period of factories running on half time, with many of them closed; construction work at a standstill; strikes tying up what lit tle industry was left: retailers selling half of their normal quantity; five million people out of employment Yet with all of these handicaps there has been no whisper of a finan cial panic, such as have caused wide spread disaster in former rears. Does this indicate that the day of panics for thia country is over? It •vould seem so. No matter how- much we may dif fer in our political beliefs, or what party may be in power, the fact re mains that the American people have an abiding faith in the stability of their government. They know that it is as sound as the Kock of Gibraltar. They know that while we may have our periodical depressions in busi ness—as we will always have at in tervals—the stability of the govern ment precludes any possibility of destructive panics. Therefore we have no panics. This is the U. S. A- Stop and think! There are probably more aliens in this country than in any other coun try on the face of the earth. Our laws are more lax and there is trreater opportunity for conspiring against the government t.ian there is ;iny other country. The punishment we mete out to such conspirators (when we punish them at all) is probably more lenient than that to be found in any other country. And yet it is a fact that there is lest internal unrest in this country than in any other. There is less un dermining of the established order of government. There is less dissatis faction of every nature. And why? We have no kings or nobility, no landed aristocracy of ancient lineage, no class distinctions such as they have in the old world. We are a democratic people; our rulers are elected by vote of the peo ple and they govern for the benefit of the people. There is no other government quite such as ours. There is no other gov ernment as generous and as humani tarian as ours. Aliens who come to our shores make many times the money they made in the lands from whence they rame. They are free agents and have no masters. They are men, and not serfs. They have brains enough to see the advantages of such a government as ours They have too many brains to to destroy the source from which their increased sustenance comes. Ir all lands there are a few wild and rabid fools who seek the destruc tion of government »amply because it is government—to sever their own noses for no other reason than that noses are a part of the human anat omy. , Yhey are fewer, and less wild, and less rabid, in this country than in any other. When you hear an isolated idiotic nincompoop railing against this coun try, just ask him how he would like to be forcibly sent back to the place from whence he came? H p will havp no answer ready for you. There is none to be made.
