“I Refuse to Take the Million Legacy
Because the Money Is Not Mine.”
W ith a N ew L ink of
Ajax and Michelin Tires
I have renounced my right to a milhon-dollar legacy left me by
my father. I refuse to take the money because it is uot mine. A system
which starves thousands while hundreds *re stuffed condemns itself. A
system which leaves a sick woman helpless and offers it* servtaaa to a
healthy man condemns itself. It is such a system tliat offers me a mil
lion dollars.
It is blind to the simplest truth known to every child, the truth that
the hungry should be fed and the naked clothed. I havo had to chouee
between the loss of private property and the law which is written in every
human heart I choose the one which I believe tu be true.
f believe I could do no good with the money. It is the man who
gives food to the hungry who does good, uot tbs dollars given in exchange
for the food. 1 would be happy to bo the man if I had the food to giro,
but I cannot lend myself to handling the money that is uot mine even
though the good that might be dune is possibly great
There are great opportunities to do good, but they are iu men's
heart*, not in the check book.
but it may now be confidently said
that there is a wide-spread recogni
tion of th« right of such corporations
as this to receive from the users of
their service an amount equivalent to
the cost of that service, and today
there is also public recognition of the
principle that investment honestly
made and competently administered
is entitled to a fair return. We may
look forward, therefore, with confi
dence that we will receive fair treat
ment as long as we deserve it.
Maney to finance this company has
heretofore been sought principally
outside the state of Oregon. It is be
lieved that it would be mutually ad
vantageous if we. who are employed
by the corporation, and also ths peo
ple directly served by the corporation,
should be financially interested in it.
With this purpose, the corporation is
now offering to its employes, its pa
trons and the public generally $1.000.-
000 of 5-year gold notes bearing 8
per cent interest.
The new invest
ment for sdditional facilities to be
made during the year 1921 will ma
terially exceed the amount of the note
issue now offered.
