GRANGE ELECTED NEW OFFICERS LAST SATUR DAY FOR COMING YEAR The regular meeting of the Lents grange was held Saturday. December 20, in Grange hall. The elections of local and state officers wen- held, local officers being elected as follows: Master. T. .1. Krender. Overseer. Lena Nelson. Ix-cturer. Wilson Benefici. Chaplain. Jennie Miller. Secretary. Grace E. Furey. Treasurer, Olive Forte. Steward, W. A. Young. Assistant Seward. A. F. Miller. Lady Assistant. Lillian Thom as. Gatekeeper. F. O. Snuffins. Court: Pomona. Mary Prince. Ceres. Anna McNeil. Flora. Twila Armstrong. F. O. Snuffins was re-elected a member of the executive com niittee. All appointive offices will be filled by the incoming master. T. J. Kreuder« and th»* names of the appointees will be announced at the next meetin.; which will be the second Satur day in January. The state officers were bal loted on in this as in the other granges throughout the state, the result of which will be made known at the state grange ineei- ing in the late spring, The in stallation of the newly electe I local officers will be held at the next meeting, the installation ceremony being held behind closed doors. Plans are under wav to secure an installation of ficer from some neighboring granre. At the regular ceremonial and business session last Saturday the following were admitted by demit: Judge and Mrs. Mor row, Mr. and Mrs. J. W . Black and Mr. and Mrs. Keller. Mrs. Paunea and Miss Twila Arm- strong were admitted by rite. On account of the shortne-s of the time Attorney W. H. H Dufur postponed his address til1 the February meeting, express ing in a short talk his willing ness to assist the grange. An entertaining feature of th • program was a piano «"-lo given by Lyle Peters. MRS. NICHOLS DIED SUD DENLY AT SHERIDAN A letter was received Monday by the Herald from a man by the name of W. H. Hayes, of Sheridan, stating that Mrs. M A. Nichols died there Friday, December 19, of heart trouble. It is presumed that this is the M rs. M. A. Nichols who lived until recently on Gilbert road about half a mile east of the Lents school house. Mrs. Nichols husband died last spring, death being caused by poisoning sup posed to have been taken by mistake. No particulars were given in the letter as to funeral arrangements. LEE MINOT SERIOUSLY INJURED BY SHAFT OF “ STANDARD OIL TRUCK Lee Minott, <>334 84lh court, was caught in the drive shaft while working under a motor truck Monday morning, and in addition to internal injuries was terribly bruised by the terrible In some mauling he received, became caught manner his coat in the revolving shaft and all his clothing but his shoes and collar were torn from his body, One rib was broken in • two places and one of the broken parts was turned completely over. It was necessary to oper ate Wednesday morning in order to straighten the broken part. After the accident Mr. Minott got to his feet unaided, but soon collapsed and did not regain consciousness for several hours He was taken to St. Vincent’- hospital, where it is stated his recovery is assured, although it will be a long time before h.- will be able to be about again. He worked in the truck repair department of the Satndard Oil company at Linnton, and since the recent storm he hail been obliged to put in a great deal of overtime in order to keep the oil delivery trucks in repair, the work all being done at night. KERN PARK SCOUTS ACTIVE THIS WINTER The Kern Park Scouts, troop 21, have been active even in the face of unusual weather, Their new assistant scoutmaster, Chester Reed, took them on a skating lark to Kelly's Butte during the very cold weather preceding the snowfall. Before starting on their jaunt Mr. Recil put them through some military maneuvers. Mr. Reed, who ha- had four years of army life, in cluding a billet in Germany, is a graduate of the Arleta school, and he is filling Clarke Schon- boe’s place as assistant scout master of troop 21 during the latter’s 90-dav leave of absence | on account of school work. J. R. Leach, of the Phoenix Phar rnacy, Kern Park, is troop scout- ’ master. The Scouts did a good turn the night they went to Kelly’s ' Butte on a skating hike. A dis carded Ford car which had been reported stolen at 9 o’clock was found by the boys on Powell Valley Road at 10 o’clock ami to police promptly reported headquarters.
