O’Donnell has received hia commission as First Lieutenant in the Dental section of the Officers Reserve Corps. He Is subject to active duty at any time. Ray Gaston and May Ahraman. two popular young people of Lente, were married on Wednesday of this week. They have a home prepared for their occupancy on Hxth Ht. near 67th Ave. Mr. C. Bruce, of Gilbert, has sold his ' poultry bueinees to Mr. Malone and is moving his family into I^mts the last of this week. He has been very extensive ly engaged in poultry raising for some time. Rev. B. C. Dewey, of 100th St., re turned on Tuesday from an extended evangelistic trip of several weeks’ dura tion, having conducted a series of tneet- ngs in several points in Washington and Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. William Anderson, of 90th St., returned the first of the week after visiting at the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bischoff, of Happy Valley. They aleo enjoyed a camping trip during their absence. Then* are 400,000,000 acres of unused agricultural land in the United States. Figure out for yourself whether it is the housewife who peels her potatoes raw or the land speculator who causes a food shortage. Mrs. C. J. Norene, of 8440 84th St. S. E., is celebrating her birthday today. She baked herself a delicious cake and celebrated by sending the lion's share of it to her soldier boy who is guarding bridges up in the Siskyious, which is a way that mothers have. Mr. Bloyd, of the Multnomah State Bank l-ents, reports that deposits for the month of August exceeded those of a year ago by 60 per cent and that busi ness conditions generally appear to be good, with a tendency to improve rather than to decrease in volume. Mrs. Welch, of The Daliee, has been visiting her cousin, Mrs. Coy C. Organ, of 70th St, S. E., for the past two weeks. Mrs. Organ entertained the Arleta Re bekah Club at her home this afternoon, Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Fishburn assist ing her in her duties as hostess. William A. Forties and Harry Gale, of the Mt. Scott District, were among the soldier laddies to leave for American lake Sunday morning with the Ambu lance Corps. No. 19. Dick Markle, of Lente, is with the Rainlxiw division in California. Undoubtedly them* boys will soon be on tlieir way to France. E. Mills of 92nd St., has retired from the express and hauling business and has tiansformed hie Reo into a wrxxl saw, effecting the change on Saturday last, and now he is as busy as a one-arm paper hanger with the hives, just saying nothing, but "sawing wood.” His phone numlier is Tabor 2284. Give him a call. Jack Gribble, is very busy these days, having contracted to manufacture two socker wedding cakes for use during the coming week. Wonder who the gnilty parties are? There are a few people around Lente who think they have a hunch, but if Cupid has let them in on the deal they are sitting tight and look ing wise. Miss Ixiis Hershner, of 80th St. 8. E., recently successfully passed the Federal Civil Service examination and has ac cepted a poaition as stenographer in the U. 8. Geological Survey office at Helena, Mont. Miss Lois is the daughter of Prof. Hershner, of the Lente school, and has many friends in this district who congratulate her upon her sncceee. Mrs. Mary Lee, of 82nd St. 8. E., re turned last week from a month’s visit at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. A. Burk, of Tillmook. Her little daughter, Minnie, who had spent the Bummer at the coast, accompanied her home. Mrs. Ix*e lioaste of a brand new little grand daughter who arrived at the home of her daughter during the month. The little lady claim« the distinction of being the first grandchild on both aides of the house and will bf duly spoiled aecord- ingly. Rural Items Church Directory Happy Valley. The school grounds are being graded and leveled around the new building. Mr. and Mrs. 11. C. Ulrich have re turned from Eastern Washington, where the past two weeks have been sjient visiting their daughter, Mrs. Geo. Hartung. They report fairly good wheat crops.
