The H dh M JI.00 Per Year Archer Place Grocery One of the most unique grocery stores in the whole Mt. Scott district is that of R. Franks at Archer Place. The store is fitted up like a drug store or high-class ice cream parlor, and is kept as neat and clean. There is more room inside than in the av erage store and the stock is displayed to advantage. Mr. Frank is back east for the present and Mrs. Frank is general manager, Their territory ranges from 49th street to 70th street and they use an auto delivery at present. Mrs. Frank says busi ness is far better than it was one year ago, and that the paving of Foster Road will mean much in creased business, and many more homes. Mrs. Miller’s Confectionery Mrs. R. Miller is the proprietor of what was formerly known as the Archer Place Confectionery. She has conducted a similar business for many year« on the West Side but ii very pleased with the quieter and more modest buxines« in the suburbs. She has been located at Place about 10 month«. She open at al) times, and serves ice cream, etc. She find« business bet ter than she had expected when she made the change in location. Archer Place Pharmacy George E. Bradshaw, Ph. G., 1« the proprietor and owner of the bus iness and building at Foster Road. He has been located here five years, und is a graduate of North Pacific College. Mr. Bradshaw specializes in ‘‘Supplies for the Baby’’ and in prescription filling, but besides his full line of drugs he keeps paints, stationery, kodaks and ice cream. He finds business is better than at any time within the past four years. He always keeps brick ice cream on hand for parties and dessert, and claims that it is one of the cheapest possible desserts in these days of high cost of living. Archer Place Barber Shop H. F. Green is one of the most prepossessing barbers we know, if that term is allowed. We enjoyed a little chat with him in his little shop at Archer Place as he mowed the spring lawn on a little shaver’s head. He finds business fairly good, and is making an effort to close his shop every night at 7 p. m. He has a notice in the store to the effect that he already closes at that hour Mon days and Thursdays. Women Of Portland, Awake! On the principal that an injustice to one is the concern of all, every woman in Portland is vitally interested in the adoption of the Two-Platoon measure for the relief of the firemen. The fight for better conditions is being led by the wives of firemen, who are demanding some consideration as the head of familes and as citizens of the city. These women cannot win the battle alone. They need the assistance of every home-loving woman and man in the city of Portland. Especially do they need the help of women, for women only can understand their problems under the continuous duty system under which their husbands have to work for a liv ing. The Two-Platoon measure is right; it is humanitarian. Are you with us in our fight for better conditions; for the home and the babies? Then urge your friends to vote for the Two-Platoon measure. Schmidt, who says he is do ing a nice business, and his only trouble seems to be that some even of his own customers get into the habit of buying down town. He is probably about the oldest established business at this point. He will close every Wednesday afternoon during June, July and August. He has a sign in his shop showing that he will not sell any meat on Sunday. L. M. DAVIS FOR City Commissioner Good Wages—Give Labor a Chance Voters have three choices: Anabel Feed & Fuel Co. One year ago last September the present proprietors of the Anabel Feed & Fuel Co. took hold of the business, which has been established at that point for many years. They handle wood and coal, hay and grain and flour. Anabel Pure Food Grocery The business outlook is good to W. H. Lashier, who has recently bought out the general grocery store at Anabel station. He keeps two solicitors and one delivery wagon going and believes that his motto, “Satisfaction or your money back,” will result in building up a good business for him. Land Monopoly The Greatest Menace In The Food Shortag e liiiis All Nations Guilty. Food for Thought and for the Stomach There are 4,00(^100 acres of deer and game runs in Scotland, much of which were used at one time for the sustaining of thousands of farms. I There are 12,000,000 acres of idle lands in Missouri alone, all of which could be used for corn and grain crops. There are many hundreds of thou sands of acres in England held for game preserves and sheep pastures. If a tenant plows up the grass lands he is dispossessed. The land could produce immense quantities of food. It feeds deer, rabbits and sheep. In the southern states of this country a tenant farmer is dispos sessed if he puts in corn or a food crop. He must plant cotton. In the city of London, England, a great deal of land is held idle for speculation. Some say 14,000 acres. Most of it cannot be obtained for the use of gardeners for fear that it will be taxed if it is used. While New York City is plowing up some portions of its parks for food crops, speculators are holding 25 per cent of its area out of ade quate use. Ireland is one of the worst culti vated countries in western Europe. Its lands are still held in large tracts, and its farms in many sec tions are restricted to grazing when food products of a more valuable nature now could be raised. The no bility hold vast tracts out of use for parks and runways for deer and hare. There are 30,000,000 acres of good grain «nd farming lands held idle in Montana. The matter with the democracies of Europe and America is what was the trouble in Russia—land monop oly. Nature — God — has provided an abundance for all who are willing to labor. His storehouse is opened with that key. Look around you. 22 The food you putin your stomach controls the activity of your mind.
