Miss McDonald returned Friday from
Ontario.
F. A. and D. L. Miller returned Fri
day from Boise to which place they
accompanied their father,. Mr. Miller,
senior Is rallying nicely from an oper
ation to which he submitted.
George Hudson has been spending
some time at the Yale Sanatorium.
Misa Effie Cuthbert went to Good
ing Monday to spend the holidays
with .relatives.
Maurice, Judd is the first of our sol-Her-
boys to arrive home. He returned
Monday morning from camp Taylor
Kentucky.
Edson Stansell who has been on the
sick list recently went to Vale last
week to remain a short time at the
sanitarium.
Mr. and Mrs. George Birge received
a letter last week from their son
Lloyd who is in France. The fact that
he has been in France about five
months and this is the first' word re
ceived from him made the letter doub
ly welcome.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Jacobs were
shopping in Caldwell Monday.
The many friends of Joe Burgher
were grieved to see his name in the
casualty list of the Statesman the
past week. It was under the heading
"Died of Disease." Word was rceived
recently from him that he was recov
ering nicqly from wounds, hence this
later news comes as a shock to his
friends.
The committees in charge of the
Christmas Roll call of the Red Cross
have been busy securing memberships
and meeting with decided success.
Their work has been somo what ham
pered by the prevalence of the flu "But
,the membership is expected to include
practically every adult in the Bend.
Miss Lois Russell went to Caldwell
Thursday to attend a reunion of form
er Roswell High School students at
the home of J. H. Low.oll.

Last week Court Reporter Walker
took testimony in a number of cases
among them being Georgo W. Hanna
vs Hope Brothers; Molino Farms Com
pany va Woodward; and Nurse vs
Bullock.
Judge Dalton Biggs also heard the
case of Frye vs Frye in devorce proceedings.

Mrs. Alice Morfit, has returned
from Burnt river.
Harry Adams has arrived from one
of his jourii.ys in his walking up and

Captain Williams is over from Cake
for the Holidays.
Mail stage is still making daily
trips to and from Baker with automo
bile. Vada Morfitt is home for Christmas.
Mrs. Sargent is spending the winte
in Chicago.
Malheur residents are enjoying
some very fine weather,
Moy Kce has returned to China after
forty year residence in Malheur.
Horace Derrick and family have
movod to Baker.
Geo. Robinson is on a trip to Baker.

while hauling wood out of the moun
tains, had what almost terminated in

Stanfield Bros, have moved most of

News was received this week by
Eldorado Lodge No 152 I. 0. O. F. of
which he was a member of the death
of John M, Carpenter in Texas. Mr
Carpenter formerly resided here and
his many friends mourn his death,
another victim of the influenza.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Holdcn are
Christmas 'guests of Mrs. Williams.
Mrs. Holdcn being a daughter the re
side in Baker.

ARCADIA, Oregon December 24,
Jack Barrett who has been running a
freight truck from Murphy to Silver
City Idaho for the past Six weeks has
returned home to spend Christmas
with his parents Mr. and Mrs. C. W,
Barrett.
Miss Pearl and Mary Dail have ful
ly recovered -from the flu and returned
to High School at Ontario yesterday.
E. B. Butler Sr., wife and sort Coda,
have the flu. Mrs. Butler is quite sick
but it is hoped that no complication
sets in and they will soon be up again
C. Thomas and family moved from
the Dart Long place to Ontario Sat
urday where they will live for the
winter.
Sam Henry has sold out his farm
interest of the Owyhee and is stopping
for a while with his sister. Mrs. J
C. Fleming.
Mrs. Chester Lockey and link
daughter have gone to Ontario to
spend Christmas with.Jim Lockey and
family.
Mr. Darman of Ontario was upnt
the Garrett Smith ranch seeing after
his sheep yesterday. ,
Chester Lockey, Mr. Vtfnread and
Charlie Thompson went up on the
Owyhee Thursday, to appraise spme
land.
J. C. Fleming who was confined to
his bed with grippe at the last writ
ing we'nre pleased to say is up and
around again.
J. II. Wallace came down from the
Owyhee where he had been working
on the Shoestring ditch to spend
Christmas with his old friends C W.
Barrett and family.
Orin Wallace has gone up to the
Mack Johnson Ranch to feed cattle
for Clinton and Hunt. He will move
his family up there after the holidays.
R. B. Thompson and wife spent the
day with their daughter Mrs. Ira
Dail last Thursday.
C. W. Barrett and Ira Dail went to
Vale Wednesday on business connect
cd with the Arcadia school. The
school will open the 30th.
Miss Ruth Barrett spent Friday af
ternoon with Mrs. Ruth Lackey.
Miss Lillie Hunt and Miss Ida 'Ray
of Nyssa were in this vicinity Friday
getting the few remaining ones who
had not already joined to give their
dollar for the red cross.

the Treasury, in a telegram to Gov
ernor James K. Lynch of the Twelth
Federal Reserve District announces
that expenditures of the government
during the fiscal year beginning July
1, 1918, exceeded nine billion six hun
dred million dollars and that expend
itures in the month of November were
nearly $2,000,000,000. In the current
month of December up to and includ
ing Dec. 16 expenditures were $1,000
000,000. It is estimated that the total
axpenditures of the fiscal year will
lie $18,000,000,000.
