The couple arrived in Vale about midnight and after se curing the assistance of B. P. Parmer located the residence of county clerk Arthur Moody who very nccomldat- ingly went with them and issued the desired document nt about one o'clock in the morning. To Portland County Superintend ent Fay Clark left Wednesday evening for Portland where she attends the State Teachers meeting Thursday and Friday and then goes to Salem for the grading of examination papers. Spend Holidays George Huntington Currey returned home from LaGrande Thursday morning after spending Christmas with his parents. Mrs Cur rey will remain in La Grande for the holidays. SOLDIER LETTER On December 15th Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shumway of Creston received letter from their son Jack written in Franco November 15th. He is now stationed at one of the largest Amer ican aviation camps, located near Par is. He writes that he was in Paris the day after the armistice was signed, and that he never expects to see an other such a day as long as he lives. As he says ''the people were just crazy mad with joy." Jack says he hopes he may be al lowed to stay in France during the Rhine. Says he sees more sunshine winter or else to help patrol the in France in two days than he would see in England in a month. He was stationed in England from the first of July until the last of October. He, with many others, are very disappointed that they never reached the battle front. Christmas Dinner A bountiful dinner was enjoyed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. T. Nelsen on Christmas day by Mr and Mrs. B. F. Farmer, L. J. Hadley and R. G. Wheeler. The table was beautifully decorated in holiday attire and all en joyed a most pleasent afternoon. - Entertains Friends Mr. and Mrs. William Bohna enter tained a few friends at dinner Christ mas. Alter dinner tables were ar ranged and cards were played until late in the exening. Enjoy Turkey Dinner Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Nelson enter tained a large number of friends and relatievs with a turkey dinner on Christmas day. CAULIFLOWER AU GRATIN. Uoll one large cauliflower In plenty of boiling salted water until soft, but do not let It break. Cut tlio stalk off quite close to the flower, stand It up on a dish or platter. Blend together In n saucepan two tablespoon fuls of butter and four tnblcspoonfuls of flour. When smooth stir In one and ono-half cupfuls of milk, one tea spoonful Of salt, onc-balf teaspoonful of pepper and mustard nnd two table- spoonfuls of grated cheese, stir and cook for Ave minutes, then pour it all over the cauliflower, sprlnklo over with Juendcrumbs nnd grated cheese, dot "with butter and bake In a hot oven until n rich brown color. Gnrnlsh tbo pdgo with fried croutons of bread and serve hot. r.eun and Tomato Pin. Mash three cupfuls of potatoes, add salt nnd pen ;er to taste nnd -one tnblespoonful of butter. Put a layer of cooked beans !u n greased pudding dlsb, skin four tomatoes and cut into slices, put n lay er of tomatoes on the beans, sprinkle over one teaspoonful of chopped onion, ;ilso one-half teaspoonful of salt, one half teaspoonful of powdered herbs tud one-fourth teaspoonful of pepper. Cepent putting layers until all aro used mid dot over with butter. Cover with the ninsbcd potatoes, brush over with egg und sprinkle over a few but tered breadcrumbs. Bake in a hot oven until the potatoes are nicely browned and the vegetables thoroughly hot. Vegetable Goose. Soak one-half podud of bread In cold water, squeeze It nearly dry nnd mash It, add one chopped onion, one teaspoonful of pow dered herbs, ono tablcspoouful of chop ped parsley, two tablespoonful3 of but ter, ono teaspoonful of salt and one lialf teaspoonful of pepper. Mix well together and put Into a greased shal low tin and bntco in a hot oven for one 1 1 our. Cut In squares and serve hot. Lentil Soup. Lentils nro very nour ishing. They belong to the samo class is beans and peas, but they suit many Htomuchs better. Wash two cupfula of lentils thoroughly, soak overnight hi cold water, then put them in a sauce pun with the water In which they are soaked aiid add as much more as makes three pints, add ono sliced carrot, two sliced onions and one tablespoonful of chopped parsley. Cook for three h,ours, then rub the mixture through a sieve, add four tablespoonfuls of butter, one tensjKionful of salt and one-half tea spoonful of pepper and serve with toiiKtoil bread. Miss Mattie Lee passed thru Vale enroute to Denio where her brother is seriously ill with influenza, Wed nesday. The mother Mrs. Katie Lee died at Harper Monday of the same disease. Teachers Examinations Eighth grade examinations will be held in Malheur County January 1G and 17 and February 0 and 7, 1010. Pupils prepared for the examinations may be recommended for either ex amination but will not be permitted to write in both. Clinton Woodard returned to Vale Sunday from the Bensen Polytechnic school at Portland where he has been serving Uncle Sam. Mr., and Mrs. T, M. Lowe returned to their home in Nyssa last week end, Mr. Lowe driving over by car to re turn with Mrs. Lowe who had been in Vale for the week.
