A fermenting mash that any Vale householder can make in a few minutes at five cents or les expense proved in an experiment con ducted this week by the University of Orcjron extension division to be the best fly bait. The following five baits were put into competition: No. 1. Ordinary table syrup, the kind used for wailles and pancakes. No. 2. Decayed banana. No. 3. Salmon from a can; the sal mon had been exposed to the sun. No. 4. Crph tht had been left in the sun until decay had begun exten sively. No. 5. A mash made of bran, mix ed very wet with waste potato water and skimmed milk, sweetened with molasses (brown sugar will do), and containing plenty of active yeast so that it had fermented furiously. Ihese five preparations were put into five traps and the traps were set out side by tide at a Eugene fly head quarters. The results after 20 min utes' exposure of the traps were as follows: No. 1. Four flies. No. 2. Ten flies. No. 3. Twelve flies. No. 4. Thirty nine flies. No. 5. Two hundred and twenty flies. The capture of 285 flies in 20 min utes is at the rate of about one ev ery five seconds. "I think a properly constructed trap baited with the fermenting mash de scribed will catch every hungry house fly within a city block if the day is warm and sunny and the fly can get to the trap readily," said Dr. Hodge. "Honey mixed with this bait adds to the cost and probably does not make it better. There are baits that will aw flies more readily than even this mash, but they are too offensive to describe and too dangerous to use; the discharges from open sores of an imals are one. The character of these affinities show how great a menace to mankind the housefly really is." The fact that the bran mash drew six flies to every one caught by the decaying crab and 18 to every one caught by the stale salmon does not nece-sarily rule either of these last named baits out. The place of exper iment was near a slaughter house where the flies were glutted with an imal food and turned gladly to the pleasant variety afforded by the mash. In a competition in a city block where animal food is scarcer, the catches might be more even, but Dr. Hodge considers the mash the best general bait under almost any circumstances. "Flies love variety," said Dr. Hodge. 'In a brewery, a trap should be bait ed with milk; in a dairy, with beer."
