MALHEUR FORWARDING PARID A MV VAU:, CHILDREN OF ONTARIO ARE GRADED AT THMOMES Novel Plan, Inaugurated by Prof. Conklin, is Work ing Nicely and Children are Taking More Interest in Work at Home All Eager for Perfect Grades Great interest is being manifested here and in other parts of the state in the novel plan inaugurated in the Ont ario schools by Prof. E. B. Coklin. The plan is a card system whereby the parents are asked to grade their children on the work they do at home. It includes grading on work nbout the house,cleanlines8, keeping of tem per, doing thing without being told, doing the chores, and in general work around the home. Prof. Conklin, some days ago while speaking at the Vale Chamber of Com merce, in explaining his card grading system, said that he was pleased to be able to say that his plan was working out in fine style. That In spite of much discouragement at the begining from various parents he had already noticed that everybody in his town was begi ning to take great interest in the gra ding. Children at first did not take to it kindly but now they are as anxious to have their grade cards at home as perfect as those at the school. Prof. Conklin's idea in using this home grading system is to encourage the children to help at home, to be more neat, and to take interest in the things about them. He stated further that he found that the chidlren, since the inauguration of the card system, seemed to take more general interest in the school work. TO BEGIN WORK OF LAYING STEEL ON NYSSA EXT. Character of Constructioa on Nyssa- Homedale Line Indicates That It's for Through Traffic WORK STARTED ON NEW STAMP MILL AT RAINBOW MINE Large Mill Being Built at Big Mine in the Mormon Basin, Malheur County's Famous Mining District Preliminary work for the construe tion of a 100-stamp mill has been begun at the Rainbow mine. The mine is under the managment of How ard S. Lee and has been making ex cellent showing since the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining company bought the property some two years ago. The property had a mill on it which was built under the previous ownership but has proved in adequate for the present demand. The company has been planning on im provements for some time and recent ly when Mr. Lee and several officers of the company made a trip to this city Mr. Lee said that the company would keep on working the way it has and probably would make some new improvements during the coming sea son. The work oh the 100-stamp mill shows that the company is well satis fied with their property and the show ing that It has made. It will be push ed just as fast as possible. It is ex pected too that electric motive power will be put into the Mormon Basin country by the time that the machin ery is ready to be put in action. With this and the backing the present own ers have there is not the least doubt but that the Rainbow mine will be come one of the dig producers of the Northwest. Jaa. Lawrence of this city made a trip to Ontario Sunday afternoon and returned on Monday. J. A. Williams of Ontario has been in the city the past week. M. W.Scott came down from Beulah the fore part of the week to attend circuit court. Nyssa, April 22 According to the latest information secured here, work will start in a day or two with 50 men on tne laying of the steel on the re cently completed grade between Nysea and Homedale, which will be a link in the main line of the O. S. L. to be built on the south side of the Snake River between Buhl and Nyssa. The character of the work being done on the Nyssa-Homedale extension reached months ago by the general public, that the O. S. L. will run is heavy trains on the south side of the Snake when that line is completed from Buhl west. The concrete cul verts, syphons, etc., on the Nyssa- Homedale are of the best possible construction, being reinforced with heavy steel rods. Much new acreage Is being put un der the plow this year for the first time, in the vicinity of Nynsa. For instance, in the Kingman colony dis trict fully 3000 acres of new land will be brought under cultivation this spring. Twelve carioaas oi i to 24- inch pipe have been unloaded at Nyssa this month for the Irrigation system at Kingman colony. Piactically every resident land owner in the Kingman colony district will this year set out from five to fifty acres of orchard, each. It is reported a 400-acre prune or chard is being planted this spring at Arcadia, about three miles west of Nyssa. Probablv 400 acres of orchard on the Idaho side of the Snake river, tributary to Nyssa, will come into bearng this year. A number of the owners of five and ten-acre tracts here will build homes on their tracts this year. That business a Nyssa is improving is shown by the freight receipts lor March at Nyssa, which amounted to 19 carloads, bringing the O. S. L. a rev enue for the month of $15,000. A three-mile drainage ditch will be built just to the northwest of Nvssa this year, and will drain 1300 acres of fine land. Ths ditch will empty into the Snake river two miles below Nys sa. Nyssa is in the fore front when it comes to drainage, as this plan has been actively followed here for the past three years.
