MALHEUR COUNTY
LAND GOOD BUY
The first of last week John Sham-
berber, of Payette, purchased 120
acres of school land near Jacobsen's
Gulch on the Dead Ox Flat. Mr.
Shamberger realizes just what the big
body of land lying in Malheur county
will do with water on it and makes
the purchase feeling that it is one of
the best investments he could find.

UNDERWOOD MINES SOLD
TO WALLA WALLA PEOPLE
The famous Underwood placer
mines in the Cornucopia district have
been sold to Walla Walla captalists at
a reported price of $100,000.
The House public lands committee
by a unanimous vote of those present
a few days ago favorably reported the
Borah-Jones three-year homestead
bill, substantially as recommended by
sub-committee.
The three-year feature is retained
and, instead of granting the entrymen
six months' leave of absence each
year, the bill requires at least seven
months' residence each year, which is
equivalent to five months' leave. The
bill does not specify any particular
amount of cultivation required, but
does require every entryman to have
a habitable house upon his land be
fore he can receive a patent.
Senator Borah, after assurance re
ceived from Speaker Clark, predicts
that the bill will pass the House, and
he has the promise of the President
that he will sign it. The House
committee amendments will be ac
ceptable to Senators Borah and Jones.
ORCHARDS MUST

County Fruit Inspector Lackey,
while in town last Saturday, stated
that ne was about ready to start a
tree spraying crusade throughout Mal
heur county. "All of the older or
chards must be sprayed," aaid he,
' ana am also going to lee that no
infected fruit is shipped or peddled
over here from the Idaho orchards."
VALE'S PROGRESS
TOLD BY OTHERS
Last week's Huntingon News said:
Improvements in Vale during the
last year total more than $250,000,
and prospects indicate more for the
year 1912. The location of the Ore
gon Eastern railway headquarters
there and the reclaiming of 40,000
acres of land surrounding the city by
the Bully creek irrigation project,
construction on which Is scheduled to
begin in early spring, are two of the
signs of a busy year which are ad
vanced. The news of the Bully Creek pro
ject was made kown through the fil
ing of 57 water contracts covering
10,000 acres, and the remaining 5,000
acres of the first unit are in sight,
say the promoters. Water for this
project will, it is said, be available
the spring of 1914.

Oregon Pays Other States Millions for the Very Things She Has Unde

That not one barrel of the 1,500,-
000 barrels of Portland cement, valued
at $3,000,000, used in Portland ter
ritory last year, was manufactured in
the state is one of the startling state
ments in the new bulletin to "The
Economic Mineral Resources of Ore
gon" by Prof. M. M. rark oi the O.
i. C. school of mines, who is also
irector of the State Bureau of Mines,
which is publishing the new work at
Salem.
Although Oregon produced approxi
mately $4,000,000, worth of geologi
cat product in 1910, more than $12,-
000,000 worth were imported from
other states and foreign countries, over
three-fourths of which could have
been produced within the state. More
than $4,000,000 worth of clay pro
ducts, such as brick tile, pottery, ter-ra-cotta
and fire clay materials wee
used in the vicinity of Portland alone
last year, and but $1,000,000 worth
of these were manufactured in Ore
gon. California and Washington have for
se me years spent thousands of dollars
investigating the mineral resources
of their territory, while Oregon has
done practically nothing in this direc
tion. Prof. Parks advocatea a more
thorough knowledge of th geologi
cal resources of the state, through a
careful investigation the results of
which may be published to the world.
Thus the cement man, for instance,
will be attracted here to develop the
limestone deposits just as they have
hitherto been developed in the statea
north and south of us through the
dissemination of accurate information
regarding such deposits.

Hog Raisers of Interior Make Mon

Top Price Paid
Portland, Ore , March 12, (Spec-
al) A new era in the development
of Central Oregon and the Deschutes
Valley bean with the receipt, on
March 8, at the Portland Union Stock
yards, of a carload of 104 hogs.
They took the top price of the season,
$6.95 per hundred weight. The most
significant feature of the transaction
was that they had been fatened on
alfalfa and finished on wheat, the
total cost to the growers being $3.50
per hundred weight.
The hogs were loaded at Opal City
and Madras, 64 head belonging to the
Baldwin Creek & Land Company and
70 head to C. M. Elkinsof Prineville.
The stockyards officials were de
lighted over the transaction; they
ay it is a moat valuable object lesson
on the change from range and bonan
za wheat ranching to intensified farm
ing conditions.

MORE MALHEUR
COUNTY SOIL TO
BE IRRIGATED
Great progress is being made of the
Payette bridge across the Snake river
and within a few days foot passeng
ers will be able to cross from the
Dead Ox Flat.
With the news also comes the re
port of splendid progress in the irri
gation of a vast acreage of rich arid
land in the Dead Ox Flat country,
one of the finest sections in Malheur
county. The new friends of that sec
tion are Sinclair Mainland, of the Idaho-Oregon
Light & Power Company,
and James A. Green & Co., who have
joined Col. Mu.Ier of Payette and are
getting the land signed up as rapidly
aa possible, and as soon as 2750 acres
are signed up for water, work will
begin in enlarging the work of irri
gation started by Col. Muller.
Mr. Mainland undertakes to finance
the project, James A. Green & Co.,
will install thu machinery and con
struct the canala, and Col. Muller
throws his installed plant aa it now
is, toward helping out the deal and
securing water for his own holdings.
Four thousand acrea will receive
water by thia plan and thua be made
ready to yield enormous crops.
