The Volnnlerr Orsantat. A preacher In a village church one Sunday morning said: "Our organist Is 111 to-day; will some one play Instead?" An anxious look crept o'er the face of every person there, As eagerly they watched to see who'd fill that vacant chair. A man then staggered down the aisle whose clothes were old and worn ; How strange a drunkard seemed to me In church on Sunday mornl But as he touched the organ keys, without a single word, The melody that followed was the sweetest ever heard. Refrain: The scene was one I'll ne'er forget as long aa I may live. And Just to see It o'er again all earth ly wealth I'd give. The congregation all amazed, the preacher, old and gray. The organ and the organist who vol unteered to play. ach eye shed tears within that church, the strongest men grew pale; The organist In melody had told hi own life's tale. The sermon of the preacher was no lesson to compare With that of life's example who sat In the organ chair. And when the service endd not a soul had left a seat Except the poor old organist, who started toward the street Along the aisle and out the door he slowly passed away; "The preacher rose and softly said "Good brethren, let us pray." Llaka Between Peninsula of Florida anil Island of Antilles. Stranded at the threshold of tht continent a "bunch of keys" lies along the northern and western border ot the Strait of Florida, the gateway be tween the Atlantic and the Gulf; and with the exception of Key West tht 'tide of maritime trade leaves them toi, one side, shunning their coast of per llous reefs and traditions of ship wreck, with Its warning line of light houses. About the only persons, ex cept their inhabitants, who have any real knowledge of the keys are a few sportsmen who have cruised and fished In the waters of this veritable angler's paradise. Geographically, the keys are links The Sinner and the Bona;. A ' sinner was wandering at eventide; His tempter was watching close by at his side; In his heart raged a battle for right against wrong; But hark! from the church he hears the sweet song, "Jesus, lover of my soul, Let me to Thv hosnm flv!" He lingered and listened to every sweet cnora; He remembered the time he once loved the Lord. Come on, says the tempter, come on with the throng; But hark! from the church again swells the song: "While the billows near me roll, While the temnest Hflll la hla-h!" O, tempter, depart, I have served thee too long, I fly to the Saviour, He dwells In the song, O Lord, can It be that a sinner like me. iay- nna a sweet refuge by coming to Thee? Hla-hwar Advertlalnaj la Pompellsa Days More Offensive Than Now. When Professor Abbott travels from New York to Princeton he passes through long lines of cows, tobacco pouches, whisky bottles, suspenders and golden promises of health, happi ness and wealth through the eating of various breakfast foods. Most travel ers find In these the evidences of a brutal commercialism; the man who knows his Romans knows that they are a classical survival. In a way the highway advertising In Pompeii was more offensive than the contemporary outbreak of bad taste in public appeals; In Pompeii the advertisements were put on the walls of private houses, and even on the tombs! We have not yet put our ceme teries to this use. Professor Abbott reprints some of these announcements, largely of a political character, Indi cating, as one would expect, that Pompeii, being In a city in which vice waa reduced to a science, had a Tam many Hall of its own, and there were people In the town in revolt against the desecration. On one wall an Indig nant citizen put his disgust in words which still survive: "I wonder, O wall, that you have not fallen In ruins from supporting the tiresome produc tions ot so many writers." On a monu ment not far from Rome this prayer of a righteous man found: "Bill post er, I beg you to pass this monument by. If any candidates name shall have been painted upon It, may he suf fer defeat and may he never win any office!" It Is amusing to read the post er announcing that "the farmers nom inate M. CaBselllus Marcellus as Bdlle." Evidently there were granger before Kansas! It Is encouraging to be assured In large letters of Q. lirut tlus Balbus that "be will guard the treasury," and of a certain Julius Polybius that "he supplied good bread." We are reminded that there Is nothing new under the sun by the leclaratlon concerning a candidate hat "ball player support him." Out ook. Mot Aptlr Worded. An absurdly worded statement of a fact which was not in itself remark able recently tried the gravity of the listeners. It was on the occasion of the funeral of an elderly woman In a New England town. She had left an old mother, nearly ninety years of age, and an only son who was well on to ward fifty. The services were conducted by a timid young clergyman recently set tled over the parish. After praying for many and various things he said: "And two we expetlally pray that the Lord will comfort and suHtaln In their Ions and sorrow. One I the or phan, wbo, althoueh no longer young. Is an orphan still aud must so con tinue. Tha other I the mother, far advan'd In years, who has survived her daughter, although considerably her senior." Youth's Companion. Locally known as "Conchs, they are the descendant! of English-speaking white settlers who came over from the Bahamas when Florida was a British possession. There Is a tradition that the name Conch Is derived from the standard ol a conch shell on a pole, adopted by the native Bahaman regiment which helped the British garrison to beat ofl a Spanish attack on Nassau in the seventeenth century, and that the keyt were populated by descendants of thest fighting Bahamans. The late Thomas Bone, "the sailor's missionary," was the soul of kindness, but he had a keen wit and a ready tongue, too. An Instance given la his recently published life is the follow In: "His work was not without its hu morous aide. Among the new ' men there were always some who Bought a little amusement at his expense, but they reckoned without their host His kindly manner never changed. The smile never left his face. There was no venom In the retort, but it seldom failed to silence the Interrupter. The laugh raiser at his expense' made it quite certain that no second attempt would be made. "Seeing him approaching one day, one of a group of sailors announced hla Intention of having some fun. Ha stepped forward and removed his hat, revealing a perfectly smooth crown, and asked: " 'Can you tell me why my head Is so bald, while all my companions have plenty of hair?'
