REBUKE THAT WAS DESERVED
How Andrew Jackson, Warrior Presl.
dent, Gave Buchanan a Fairly
Gentle "Call Down."
Andrew Jackson, wnrrlor and Presi
dent, was a follower of the doctrine
which exnlts the vnlue of nttcndlng to
one's own business. On one occasion
James Bucbnnnn, who was a diplomat,
a gentleman nnd a scholar, nnd some
what of a ladles' man, although h
lived and dld unmarried, brought nn
English woman of high degree to call
upon General Jackson, then monarch
of all he surveyed in and around the
White House. Leaving the lady In the
reception room below and going up
stairs to the President's private
quarters, 'Senator Buchanan (for he
wns the newly elected senator from
Pennsylvania at that time) found
Jackson unshorn and unkempt In
dressing gown and slippers before 8
blazing log fire, smoking his cob pipe.
When he was told about the beauti
ful English woman, he replied that he
would-be delighted to meet her, and
ordered Senator Buchanan to go back
nnd tell her that the President would
be down Immediately. Senator Buch
anan wns terribly afraid that Gen
eral Jackson' would not change his
clothes before he made his appear
ance In the drawing room and ht
ventured to suggest to him the pro
priety of his doing so.
"Buchanan." said the old warrior,
rising and deliberately knocking the
ashes out of his pipe, "I will tell you
something thnt will do you good, ai
It doth tHe upright in heart, nnd that
Is, tr-nt'I once knew a man down In
Tennessee who innde n fortune by
nttcndlng to his own huslness."

the man himself.
