STORY OF THE FAMOUS
OLD OREGON TRAIL
A Narrative of the Wilson Price Hunt Expedition
in 1811-12 and the "Great Migration" Into
Oregon Country, in 1852-3
By Walter E. Mcachcn, Pros. of.Old Oregon Trail Assoc.
(Continued from laBt wook.)
Hol-o Itoglnson, Hcznor and Ho
buck wcro outfitted and remained to
trap and hunt. On Scptcmbor 10,
Mr. Stuart mid his Jlttlo party
reached tho headwaters ot tho
Snako whoro tholr horses wcro
stolen by n rascally band ot Crow
Indians and they proceeded on tholr
wny on foot. Tho winter was spent
In camp on tho banks ot tho Plato
river nnd in tho spring tho march
to St. Louis was ronowod. Flnnlly
on April 30, 1813, tho party reached
St. Louis and tho dispatches wuro
srnt to Mr. Astor In Now York City.
Tho journoy had taken ton months
of tlmo and Incrcdlblo hardships nnd
tho nows of tho Journoy of Mr. Hunt
icrontctl a groat sensation, and was
tho first nows ot tho establishment
of Astoria at tho mouth of tho Co
lumbia In tho year 1843 tho first wagon
train to reach tho Wlllamotto valley
loft Fort Hall, In tho vicinity of Pocn
tolio, Idaho, under tho command' of
Dr. Marcus Whitman . This was
called at tho tlmo tho "Orcat Emi
gration" hecnuso thoro wero 1000
people In tho party. Hut nlnn, or
ten years later, tho real "migration"
took placo when 300,000 p'coplo
swept In a vast tidal wavo of human
ity from tho nilddlo wost to tho Pn
cltlo coast.
Under tho guidance ot Dr. Whit
man, tho party passed by tho prosont
slto ot Huntington and on up tho
Ilurnt rivor canyon and on Boptom
bor 28th roachod tho Powder Rlvor
valley In Ilaker county, Oregon.
Tho (Irnndo Hondo Valley was
roachod October 1st and crossing tho
IIIuq mountains his party roachod
tho Walla Walla valloy tho lattor
part ot tho month. Continuing on to
tho Columbia rlvor, tho party cm
barkod on boats nnd roachod tho
Wlllamotto valloy tho lattor part of
Novombor, 1843.
At this tlmo It Is propor to digress
for a momout and tako noto of tho
Chnmpocg convoutlon hold at Cham-
poug, Wlllamotto valloy, May 2, 1843
At this mooting 102 mon gathored.
Tho proposition ot forming n Pro
vjslonnl Govorumont was put to n
voto nnd.lt appeared to bo a tto until
a Frcnchmnu, Francois Davlcr Mot
thlou, walkod ovor to tho Amorlcan
sldo and tho groat Orogon country,
which nt that tlmo Includod all ot
Orogon, Washington, Idaho, Mon
tana ami part ot Wyoming, was
saved to tho United States.
After tho migration of 1843, only
scattering parties wondod their way
to, tho Oregon country until tho
year 1852 when tho groatost rush of
homo sookors tho world has ovor
soon took placo.
Wholo families loft their com
fortablo homo nnd friends, family
ties woro brokon and business con
nections savorod for tho purposo ot
Joining In that mad rush for tho
mystorous land across tho mountains
whoro homes might bo secured for
taking.
Perils woro considered as nought,
but with faces sot rosolutoly toward
tho sotting sun, tho pionoors ot tho
great Northwest sot out to subdue
tho wlldornoss and 'establish homos
whoro rolls tho "Oregon." Tho Old
Orogon Trail propor, bogan at In
depondonco, Missouri as did the
Santa Fo trail. For 41 miles tho
two trails pursued tho samo course,
than they forkod, tho Santa Fo head
ing southwest nnd tho Oregon Trail
to U10 Northwest,
At tho forks of tho road was a
simple sign reading, "Road to Ore
gon." That sign would bo worth
Its weight In gold today to any his
torical society. Tho Old Oregon Trail
ran to tho Northwest along tho
Little Illuo rlvor .until It struck the
valley ot the Platto about-300 mltos
from Independence.
Tho routo thon lay up the Platte
to a point near tho forks of the
Platte whoro there wero two routes.
The Orogon Trail followed the south
fork for a short distance then
turned Northwest unrt reached the
north fork, past whtt Is now Chey
enne, reaching Laramie, Wyoming,
which 'was tho last post on tho
eastern sldo of the Rockies, The
famous Independence Rock, 838
miles from Iudepondence -was one of
the most noteworthy and well known
features on the trail. The routo
lay through what is now Rock
Springs and Orcon River, Wyoming.
At -what is now Granger, the route
lay acoss the mountains to what was
called the South Pass, elevation,
7,450 foot. Fort Drldger, Wyo., was
tho first r'ostln place west of the
Rockies, 1000 miles from the Mis
souri. .
Tho routo now lay northwest to
Soda Springs on tho Dig Bend of tho
Dear rlvor in tho southeast cornor
of Idaho, thonco across tho dlvldo bo
tweon tho Dear and Port Nouff
rlvors, thenco on to Fort Hall, uoar
tho situ ot what is now Pocatullo,
Innho.
tho early days and for u long tlmo
was tho farthest outpost ot civiliza
tion. Tho Trait cloooly followed thd
Snako river for a long distance,
passing what Is now American Falls,
Uurloy, Twin Falls, Shoshone Falls,
Salmon Falls and then across tho
rlvor to what is now Bolso, Idaho,
Tho Trail crossod tho Snako rlvor
near, tho mouth of tho Uolso rlvor,
Through what Is now Vale, Oregon,
and on Uurnt rivor canyon which
was considered as ono ot tho worst
places ot road on tho ontlro trail,
Tho Trail took a canyon a llttlo
south of what Is now called Pleasant
Valloy and wondod Its way ucross
tho low foothills to what Is now
called tho Virtue Flat, coming Into
tho Powder rlvor valloy at tho pass
noar tho old Flagstaff mlno. A woll
was dug nt this point whoro tho
thirsty travelers slacked tho thlrstj
ot thomsolvos and tholr cattlo. Tho
Trail Travolod tho valloy, coming
out at tho proscnt silo ot North
,1'owdor. Tho Grand Rondo valloy1
was roachod by way of Ladd'
Canyon, tho way loading past tho
present slto ot La Oraudo nnd- on
ovor tho Illuo Mountains, past
Moacliam, on tho Umatilla, noar tho
prosont slto ot Pendleton, tho'Hound
Up City.
Tho road ovor tho Illuo Mountains
has soon llttlo changu since tho days
ot 1852-53, until tho past your whou
tho road was gradod from La Orundo
to tho summit. From tho top ot
'Cabbage Hill on tho Umatilla sldo,
tho road has boon gradod and
graveled into Pendleton and tho
State Highway Commission ot Oro
gon has promised to have tho Old
Trait In Orogon finished this year.
From Pendleton, tho Trait led to
Tho Dalles on the Columbia Rlvor
whoro tho pionoors embarked on
boats and bargos and finally arrived
in tho Wlllamotto Valloy, tho goal ot
tholr ambitious droams. Tho wagon
train of tho great migration ot 1852
was 500 miles In length and several
wagons In width.
It extended In an unbrokou string
further -than tho oyo could roach.
Tho wagons woro ot tho Pralrio
Schooner typo, wldo and deep uud
bowed at both ouds and woro usod as
boats In crossing some of tho dtiop
wldo streams encountered in tho
Journoy.
Each wagon generally bad two or
moro yoko of oxdn, horses or mules,
a milk cow or two and carried an
nvorage ot five people.
Conservatively tho numbor ot
pooplo ou this groat migration was
300,000 and the number ot cattlo
greater.
As tho party progressed, many ot
tho t'oama gave out and dlod and the
housohold effects and somo provi
sions of tho party woro left by tho
wayside In ordor to lighten tho loads.
Thon tho cholera bit tho caravan and
In 1852 over 5000 human bolngs
dlod by tho way. Shallow graves
wero mado and the oxpodltlon moved
on. Tho sufferings ot tho party
wero shared by all alike, tho women
and children not bolng exempt.
Whou thoy loft tho Missouri river
they woro beyond the palo ot the
civil law and crude Justice was motod
out by on organized court which at
tended to infections ot the law in a
mannor all It own. Tho company
being so numerous, it sunned llttlo
from Indian depredations. Tho Col
umbia d or go was also a terror to tho
traveler, but now it is traveled by
the Columbia River Highway, ono ot
tho sconlo wondors ot tho world.
Tho Marking ot tho Old Orogon
Trail by Ezra Meekor In 1000 is al
most as full ot Interest, hardships
and advonture as was tho Journey of
1862-53. Feeling' that tho Old
Oregon Trail should be preservod to
history, Mr. Meeker sot out from his
homo In Puyallup, Washington with
a Pralrio Schoonor and on ox team
to travorBO and mark tho routo
which he had traveled as a youug
man over 50 years boforo. Quoting
Mr. Moekor:
"Tho purpose ot the expedition Is
to perpetuate tho memory ot the
Old Oregon Trail and to honor tho
Intrepid pioneers who made it and
saved this great region the "Old
Oregon Country" for Amerlau rule.
