ISEID The HeU Diggers "b$h I Bovoral facts and comparisons ot Interest can bo mado from tho ac companying tablo. Porhaps tho most striking fact Is brought out In the first column of figures. Noto that In this avorago ot tho ontlro soventy- eight farms aftor deducting tho cash oporatlng expenses from tho total ro colpts but ibo cioiiurs was left as nqt farm Incomo. Asldo from the farm products consumed by the family and a house to live In this $80 re presents tho yearly return for tho termor's and his family's labor and Intorest on his $16,832 Invested. Or to put It in another way, after allow ing 6 per cont Interest on their nv vorago investment, which is a com paratively low rato for this soctlon, these farmers, avoraged a minus la bor Income of $933. Such aro the facts for these farms In 1920, when "the bottom dropped out" ot alfalfa hay prices and but very few farmers fed tholr hay. The results for the year of 1919 whon alfalfa hay sold for $16 to $16 per ton in the stack are very differ ent. Thoso results are shown In Column 6 Hero Isstead ot $80 as net farm Income the farmers aver aged $1076, and Instead of a minus family labor Income of $933, it was $739 to their credit. To analyze further the results for 1920. Out ot tho 78 farms wbb se gregated thoso who depended entire , ly on the salo ot alfalfa as their one Bource ot Income There were 16 such farms In this group and the re sults are given In column 2. Not that these 15 farms lacked $607 of making operating expenses with no ! return tor family .labor and no in forest on investment In column 3 la grouped thoso farms (only 5) that had tho major portion or tnelr in come from the sale of dairy products. These 6 dairy farms averaged $072 'net Income. The difference between this dairy group and the hay group was $1279, or over $100 per month, which Is a very fair return for the work in feeding and milking a few head of dairy cows. Jo put this com parUon on a labor-Income basis we find over $2000 In favor ot a dairy group. A similar comparison of the bay group and tho dairy group for 1919, as brought out in columns 6 and 7, does not show the same relation In fact the dairy farms, which &voraged but $230 hlghor, In not farm Income, wiun mo nay rarms, baa only $11 more family labor Incomo. As has been stated bofore was yoar of high prices for hay when comparod to tho prices ot dairy products. Of course It is true that nrlrna for ,lnlrv n.n. ducts wore high In 1919, but not as niBn comparatively as bay prices. In order not to draw conclusions from only n fow farms In one sec tion, tho results on 40 dairy farms In Washington county for 1920 aro tabulated In column 4. Here it Is noticed that net farm Incomo was $1622, while It was only $672 for tho uairjr group in Mainour county for 1920. A lllcllOr InvilotnmnH. f..... tho Washington county group' upon which io cnargo interest leaves tho labor incomes, howovor, quite close in comparison, In comparing tho hay farms with tho dairy farms for 1920 (col. 2 & 3) attention can be called to the total receipts. The dalrv crntin ...II. about one-third tho acreage and one- ....... ...a uiicgiiucu, WVr DUIO IO take In approximately 80 per cont as much Income na thn hnv cri-nnn In fact, only $508 less, Their total penses were $1787 less. Tho no item contributing most to this ilg difference In expense Is hired af)T, $12f2 on hay farms and $203 on the dairy farms, over $1000 difference. No doubt this Is due to tho excess la bor demanded at haying tlmo to ero for threo times as much hay. 7ho dairy farms being moro dlvf'rsliaii aro cared for entirely by faOUly it bo distributed over tho entire yiu. Again the larger slzo of the hay ftfej calls for $450 iuorp water tax, 4n Item whlclr Is large enough at b,st. averaging 25 per ceist ot tho expemea on all groups, of farms The Btrlklntr furl hrmiirht nut in this study surely siyjgrts the of en preached story "Advantages of Di versified farming over the One C op System " "It Is not necessary t- kill back on the fertility reason l lo-r ing so, but Immediate and dlr few turns In dollars and cents show he problem to bo purely a farm manage ment one. And In u section as thtti one Is, where conditions are ideal tor alfalfa hay and corn silage, the family slie dairy farm should become a permanent business. R. V GUNN, Fajm Management Demonstrator.
