SPIRIT OK NKIGHROItLlNKHA
What Ir there moro clinnnlng In
tho character of tho peoplo iwlth
whom you live than tho spirit of
nclghborllnoss? What adiltt to tho
joy of HvIiik mora than tho friendly
Krootlng of neighbors when they
meet?
Cities and towns are but aggrega
tions of Individuals, and what Is
trim of Individuals Is true, too, or
communities. Cities and towns
ought to ho friendly, Itlvalry does
not call for exhibitions of unfrlond
linens. Whon niich exhibitions become tho
rulo of their meeting there In little
loft to do othor than to havo a
frank heart to heart talk about
their differences, nnd If they cannot
than bo adjusted an ngroement to
disagree nnd avoid each other Is tho
only sonslbla thing to do.
Whon Individuals In a neighbor
hood cannot got on together a hap
py solution Is often found In ono of
them moving to a moro congenial
neighborhood. Unfortunately com
munities cannot thus adjust thorn
selvos. Towns must stay pit.. It
In too bad that this Is so, bat
it Is.
Thero Is anothor thing about com
munity troubles. Tho spirit engen
dered by tho nets of n few Individ
uals, unfortuuatoly Affect others.
It Is particularly unfortunate that
thono who do not Mop to think say
and do things which hurt their com
munity In tho eyes of their neigh

Tho thinking, consldcrnto peoplo
of Ontario, for example, tlko those
of our neighboring town of Vale
will not tako too seriously tho ro-
cent dlfferenco over a mere ball
game. All will regret the occur
ences, and consider the sourco of tho
trouble. It poor sportsmanship ban
been shown, tho poor sports alone
should be blamed; or pitied; for
thoy aro to bo pitied who cannot
play a gamo fairly and bo good losers
when fairly defeated. It Is no dis
grace to loso a ball gamo; but It
Is disgraceful to so loso control of
one's temper as to becomo childish.
VACATION'S VALUE
Vacations nro paradoxical, Ono
goes on a vacation seeking rest.
Physically ono often docs secure
ovorythlng but tho rest ho nought;
that Is physically, and comes homo
to rest up from tho exertions, but
nftor all physical rest In not the on
ly object to bo obtained In a vaca
tion. Thoro In no doubt that n separa
tion from tho routlno of work, n
change of nccno and the meeting of
others than those ono comes In
dally contnet with In diverting. Not
only that it makes ono realize how
truly fortunnto Is ono who liven in
a good substantial town surround
ed by cnorgotlc fellows who nrc
striving to do thfngs.
No mattor what tho advantages
possessed by other communities or
tactions of Oregon certainly Mai
nour county can stand comparison
with thorn, and so far as commun
ities go Ontario is as woll nltuatud
and hnn within Itn borders men nble
to rcallzo tho possibilities of this
section.
From Rend, howovor, wo bollovt'
that Ontario men might well tako n
lesson In co-operation. Thero they
havo carried tho spirit of pulling to
gether farther than it has been our
pleasure to witness In any commun
ity of Its slzo anywhere. No Rend
has nothing on Ontario. Aside from
their wondorful tlmbor resources
and tho most magnlflcont mountain
scenery at their door, they hnvo not
tho potential possibilities to bo
found in this Bnnko Rlvor Valley.
Rut thoy havo tho spirit. Thoy work
togothor.
After all of Ontario's business
men take their vacations and feel
oncouragod by comparisons, wo trust
that tho spirit of co-operation will
bo enhanced so that a determined of
fort will bo tnado to capltallzo tho
possibilities of this great section of
Oregon.
COMKADARIN ON THE ROAD
Whon tourists meot thoy smile, It
Is one of tho plensuros of a trip
through Oregon these days, tho
chanco acqualntnnco one gots with
Americans from overywhero, for
they nro coming from tho endn of
tho country to Oregon now.
Few nro tho stops ono makes by
tho waysldo that Is not tho occasion
of solicitation of passers by. "Need
any helpT" Is tho salutation from
almost ovory passing car,' while
othors Just stop to get acquainted,
Inqulro nbout the roads and tho luck
you Iwvo had, whllo giving n graphic
nccount of their own experiences.
Cortnlnly a great out-of-doors Is
democratic, nnd mnkos Its dovotees
so.
A trip over Oregon highways to
day Is convincing proof of tholr real
vnluo to the stnto. In tho short
spaco of an hour or two cars bear
ing llconso tags of H states, besldo
tboso of Rrltlsh Columbia and other
Canadian provlncos, wore counted,
California cars could he found
evorywhore, whllo there was not n
tourist park that did not hnvo from
ten to hundreds of cars. Now all
theBO moan money. Haw much
money tourlHts have spent In Ore
gon this yoar will never he definite.
ly known, It cannot be traced;
but It will bo literally millions of
dollars. Every year tho sum will In
crease, for Oregon roads nro becom
ing known, Oregon scenery Is being
appreciated. Truly Oregon Is ono
of tho thresholds of tourist prosperity.
