Phono 20S-J You May as Well Havo the Host Union Experiment Station Tents Cattle nnd Sheep Fowling Itatlous To Determine One Moit Economical Whether tho hay and cnsllago farmors of Eastern Oregon find a market for their hay, and whothor tho producers of rnngo cattlo and sheep get tho most for tholr teodors, depends on Just otto thing; Profit able Feeding.. If cattlo and sheep can bo fed profitably In tho sections adjoining tho ranges, Orogon hay, cnsllago and grain wilt bo fed nnd fat Btock marketed from Oregon. It Is a matter of much concern to all persons who nro Interested dlroctly or Indirectly In tho prosperity of Oregon. Realizing this, tho Union Uranch Experiment Stntlon began feeding oxperlmonts n number of years ago to test out tho comparative values of different kinds of liny, of en silage, grain, sholtor, warming water etc. At tho tlmo this work was started, feeding was practically con fined to hay alono, which has been found to bo uneconomical In many Instances. A proper combination of other feeds with tho hay In ordor to provldo a choapor ration with oonsoqucnt Incrcaso of profits, was tho problem of tho Station. HcbuUs from tho work of tho first ninety days feeding of 7 lots of steers nnd 0 lots of yearling calves, oach gqttlng a different ration has Just been completed. A report of this work Is avnllnblo by writing to tho Superintendent, Hubert Withy combe, nt Union. Ono of tho most Interesting comparisons brought out Is that of tho gains mndo when feeding thrco kinds of cnsllago with alfalfa hay. Steers fed on corn on sllngo and hay made an avorago gain of 1.3 pounds por day, com pared to 1.2 for barley-pea cnsll ago and hay and .0 pound for sun flower onsllago. Tho samo ratio practically was maintained In n sim ilar experiment with calves. Alfalfa hay and corn cnsllago was tho host of all rations from an economical standpoint. Hay alono was not fed, provlous tests having shown that It Is not comparahlo with n ration of hay and cnsllago In producing good dally gains nnd tho cost of foodlng Is much higher. Tho station doo not encourage greatly Increased feeding of steers, but believes that tho prosont Bcnlo of feeding could bo dono much mora profitably it moro attontlon was given to cltolco of feeders and tho rations fod thorn. If the farmors of the county will await the rocommendattons of this repre sentative commlttoe beforo tying up with any particular scheme, they will probably bo greatly benefitted, because tho commltteo has sources of Information regarding the mer its of the various plans for the handling of farm products, not so directly available to everyone.
