PAVING TO BRIDGE
RECALLS FIGHT MADE
FOR CONSTRUCTION
(Continued from Pace One)
After condemnation pro
ceedings had l)eon had to se
cure the final stretch of
right-of-way for the road
that is now paved, work was
started. In places tho road
was so swampy that five and
six feet of gravel was used
to make it passable.
The commission was badly
handicapped. It had used a
larger portion of its funds
than it had planned on the
right of way on the castside
and in making the cut. How
ever it completed tho task,
and on Novembor lGth 1009
reported to the city council,
which was then headed by
Dv. G. A. Poguo, as Mayor,
that its work was completed.
In connection with the se
curing of the appropriation
and keeping the funds City
utorncy A. N. Sohss plaved
a prominent part. The ori
ginal state appropriation
carried tho usual 91) day
clause, and Ontario men
learned that one L. U. Mo-
Mahou of Salem intended to
enjoin tho state officials
trom issuing tho state war
rant, so Mr. Soliss made a
trip to Salem, reached tho
office of the Stato Treasurer
at 8 o'clock in tho morning
of tho last day, secured tho
warrant and cashed it at a
Salem bank and then sent
the funds to Ontario. Mc
Mahon did not quit then. He
came over hero to see tho
County Court to enjoin it
from issuing a warrant, but
again was lorestallou by the
vigilanco of tho bridgo commissioners.
"What this ' bridgo has
meant to Ontario only the
business men realize fully.
But it 1ms been of equal ad
vantage to tho people ol the
Fruitland bench and of Ida
ho for it has given them
what thoy otherwise would
not havo had; two trading
centers, two towns to go to
eirjoy themselves mid tako
advantages such as towns
afford, and that thoy have
appreciated this, Ontario
realizes. For this apprecia
tion Ontario is grateful and
