Pretty Dellef-Existing In India Con
cerning the Origin of the Desu
tlful Emerald.
Scientists sny that tho emerald's
lovely Rrass-Rrcen color Is derived from
a compound of silica, nlumlnn, beryllln.
tniiRiiexhi, soda, wnter nnd some organ
ic matter unknown; others sny Hint
It Is simply n compound of carbon
nnd hydrogen resulting from nrgnnle
matter: but the nnclcnt Inhabitants of
India knew better than tho modern
MenllM. They believed tho emerald
crme from heaven.
Snys Cordon In din "Orlentnl .Me
moirs:" "A person was watching n
swarm of fireflies In nil Indian grove
one moonlight night. After hovering
a time In the inoonheaim, one particu
lar firefly, more brilliant than the rest,
alighted on the grass nnd Ihero re
mained. A spectator, struck by Its
IWIty nnd approaching to nsrerlnln
Hip rnuse, found not an Insect, but nn
ememlil, which he appropriated nnd
wore In n ring, nnd ever nfler the In
dians believed that the flretlles were
snored Insects which upon dying on the
grass turned to emeralds for the ndorn
incut of man and the glorification of
Huddhn."
That Is perhaps the rensAn yhy the
priests of Huddhn regnrd tin' emerald
with such veneration. Of course nn
flrelly can now mnko nn emerald, but
emerald certainly do mnko the money
fly.

When the Sun Was Blue.
A blue sun huw been recorded only
once. Thut wan In August, 18S3. In
Java, says the Kaunas City Slur. A
day or two before thorn was a very vio
lent eruption of a largo vok-ano about
n hundred miles from Hiitiivla. The
eruption onJed with nn explosion In
which n range of mountains wan de
stroyed, n vast cavity being left In Its
place, more than a thousand feet deep
nt one point. Illlllons of tons of rocks,
mud nnd dust were thrown high In the
nlr nnd the sun was obscured over n
large area. At Hutavla the dnrkncs
became so deep thut street lamps had
to be lighted In tho middle of tho after
noon. That condition prevailed until
toward sunset, Then the volcanic
cloud begun to clear away, loatlug the
sun visible. Instead, however, of It
being red, ns It usually Is when view,
cd through a smoke cloud. It appeared
ns a magnificent deep bluo disk, re
maining that color until It sniU bo
low the horlinn. Tho phenomenon
was spoil by everyone within 30 or 10
legroes of the e(iiatnr.
