Presdent Wilson took Vera Crua in 1914, as we vr official ly informed at the time, to get a salute for the flag and to pre vent tha shipment of arm into Mexico. He did not get his sa lute. Ha did not prevent the shipment of arms But several hundred men ware killed or wounded, and then he brought the army home without achiev ing either object. Praaidsnt Wilson ssnt an army into Mex ico in 1916, as we ware informed at the time, to get Villa "dead or alive." They did not get him dead. They did not get him aliva. Ajam several hundred r en were killed and wounded. Again President Wilson is bring ing the army home without achieving hia object. Of courae it is a mere play upon worde to say that these were not "wars." They were wars and nothing else ignoble, pointless, unsuccessful little wars, but wars. They cost millions of dol lars and hundreda of hvea, squandered to no purpose. They accomplished nothing, but they were wars.
