Microbes Breed Where i Air Is Stagnant m A V Mr 'H aW. Ventilation Synonym For Good Health By Dr. WOODS HUTCHINSON, Physician, of New York ONE of the most important findings of modern science is that the diseases of middle life are the effects of infections in an earlier stage of life. What we generally term a "little, measly, ordinary cold," caught in childhood, often LEAVES GRAVE MARKS upon the heart or blood vessels or kidneys and later in life results in weakness of the heart or in Bright's disease. , The ordinary diseases of childhood, as measles, whooping cough or others, are apt to leave a permenent stamp on our health and con tribute to the deficiency of a whole generation. We must therefore ELIMINATE THE CONTAGIOUS DISEASES BY THEIR BOOTS. AIR IN MOTION IS THI ONLY AIR THAT'S FIT TO BREATHS. THERE IS AN ANTIQUATED SUPERSTITION THAT A DRAFT PRO DUCES A COLD. THAT BELIEF IS RIDICULOUS. DRAFT IS NOT ONLY NOT DANGEROUS, BUT IT IS MOST ESSENTIAL TO OUR WELL BEING. IN CHURCHES THERE IS ALWAY8 THAT STUFFY ATMOSPHERE, BREEDING MILLIONS OF MICROBES. VENTILATION IS THE UNDERLYING PRINCIPLE OF GOOD HEALTH. A most encournging feature of tho modern ago is that most of the factories aro perfectly sanitary and lofty. If the working people could turn the places where they labor into their dwellings they would be better off. But they ought to havo BOTH A SANITARY PLACE TO WORK LN AND A SANITARY HOME. Ev ery bouse should be "killed" at the age of fifty unloss it is proved to be absolutely sanitary. The philanthropy of today is the good busi ness of tomorrow. Cheap Loans to Farmers an Aid to National Progress By MYRON T. HERRICK. American Ambassador to Franca aPWARD of two hundred million dollars a year can be aaved by the farmers of this country by the introduction of AGRICULTURAL CREDIT SOCIETIES. The average rate paid for farm loans in the United States is eight and one-half per cent The average rate paid in Europe is four and one half per cent. A reduction of four per cent in the interest paid by our farmers on their six billion dollars of borrowed capital would mean a yearly saving oi two hundred and forty million dollars. There is no more important factor in the social and economic progress of the country than the wiso development of its AGRICUL TURAL RESOURCES. Tho social importance of successful agri culture primarily is duo to the fact that farm life PRODUCES A VIRILE CITIZENSHIP. It k conducive to independent thinking and well considered action. The stability of our national life and tho maintenance of our posi tion as a great force for good among the nation, of "" upon our ability constantly to IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF OUR CITIZENSHIP.
