    ARMED UTES DEFY
SHERIFF AND POSSE
Dispute Arises Between Mexi
can and Indians; Battle
is Expected.
PREMIER POINCARE
Cortes, Polo. -Fifty I'te Indians. en
raged by the killing of one of their
members by a Mexican sherpherder.
ere off the reservation, fortified In the
Ute mountains In southwestern rolo
r4o and defying the sheriff of Monte
luna county and Indian Agent Spear
to take from them nig Rabbit, an In
41an who shot and seriously wounded
the herder.
Determined not to deliver Hlg Rab
Pit to the county authorities, the Utes
are entrenched In the mountains 18
miles from here, and have defied a
sheriff's posse of InO men.
The Indians fortified their position
after they had left the Ute reservation
kg southern Colorado, and declare they
will fight the white men to death
rather than give up Hlg Rabbit.
All are armed with repenting rifles
and are said to be amply supplied with
ammunition
The trouble with the t'tes started a
few das ago when Joseph Vlchel, a
Mexicnn shcephenler. refused to allow
two Indian hunters to camp near his
herd
A dispute arose, and the herder, ac
cording to his story, was attacked b
ths Utes. He was shot nnd seriously
wounded, nfter he had killed one of
his assailants.

Not More Than Half Of Waist Makers
Will Obey Orders
New York. An announced settle
ment of the strike In the dress and
shirtwaist brunch of the garment-making
Industn. promising to send 37.
operatives tcick to work, was followed
almost at once by rebellion among em
ployes affected against the terms their
leaders had agreed upon with the man
ufacturers.
Two meetings to ratify the agree
ment between the manufacturers and
the leuders of the dress and shirtwaist
branches of the garment making In
dustry, by which the strikers are to
return to work, were held Sunday. At
both there seemed to be only a half
hearted acquiescence by the workers
In the plans of their leaders. The
prut. i. ni affects 120 shops and close
to 10.000 operatives. It Is expected,
however, that only about half the
operatives will return Kven If all go
buck, it would leave more than 100,000
workers still on strike In other
branches of the garment trades.
