indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Then* is a now candidate in the f eld for count.*, commis-
sionei in the person o f H. R. Jonc*. of the Ankeney Hill dis
trict. Mr. Joii* s is a farmer and is solely interested it this
section o f Marion County, and is an aspirant for the nom'nation
at the Republican primaries. The south end of Marion county,
this yeai, has the chance to elect a man whose interests are in
this section. To the citizen who says that the Marion county
road funds are equally divided, we say let him drive over Mar
ion county from north to south and east to west then let him
form his own opinions.
There are two formidable condidates out for Congress on
the primary ballot. The p esent incumbent, W . C. Hawley,
and James \V. Mott, of Astoria. Mr. Mott says he is out after
Mr. Hawley’s scalp. Mr. Mott is a progressive young attor
ney of Astoria, an ex-service man and member o f the American
Legion. He made an enviable record in the Oregon legislature
end promises the same taithful representation of the people if
nominated and eleeted.
Mr. Hawley has represented Oregon in congress for the
last twenty years and has a hold on the people of this district
that will be hard to break.
\Ye have the highest regard for
Mr. Hawley, lie is a man o f high integrity and honesty, but
»t is a question in ou: mind whether a man, no matter how good
he may be, can give etlicier.t representation after so many years
ot service; nevertheless, we can do naught but recommend bo»h
of these men to the people and let them be the judges.
Hal lioss has the indorsement of 121 newspapers for his
candidacy lor secretary of state to succeed Sam Kozer.
Mr.
lioss came to Oregon City as a young man and has worked his
way up through the newspaper profession until he has held
some high positions in the press organizations and through
these offices and his active newspaper work has coine in con
tact with the people of Oregon and the activities that have been
carried or. an.J comes up for nomination well qualified.
There are ten candidates for nomination for representative
from Marion county. W e are i et proposing to tell the voter
who to vote for, but we would h'-c 1 0 suggest lour names for
Jheir consideration, v iz: Carl E. Nelson, and Dr. W . Carleton
Smith of Salem ; Mark A . Fouls«.n of Silverton, and \V. A .
W eddle of Stayton.
There is practically no opposition to the present court house
force, therefor then nomination ami election seems assured.
