In an official report to Charles V.
Vickrey. General Secretary o f the
Near East R elief. Misa Glee Hastings,
o f Spencer. Iowa, describes the piti­
able condition o f tens o f thousands
o f homeless, starring, half-naked
refugees, driven from their homes In
the war area, and huddled In stable*,
gnd out-hou3cs. or on the bare
ground, fo r lack o f shelter.
"M ost o f the refugees aro country
people with almost nothing except
ihe clothe3 cn their backs, stupefied
and dazed by their misfortunes.
Bread is given only to women and
children at the rate o f one-half loaf
for a person, each day. The milk is
Reserved for the babies and sick. The
refugees sit around, huddled up
against the «vails-— women with dull,
yad faces, little children that are blue
and pinched-w ith the cold, and too
m isirably lifeless to cry. One fam ily
o f live sleeps at night on a bare stone
door, under one thin, ragged half-
gotton blanket. In one room several
women are wasting away with tuber-
eulcsis: in another are some severe
eye cazej, including two youug blind
girls, who have no oae in tfce world
to care for them. The overflow from
these buildings live in a wooden shed
with the w all* and floors gnplng with
holes where tho wood has rutted
away and ia tents Improvised from
rags and pieces c f carpet."

Chief of Staff, has gone on record in
support o f the work o f the Near East
R elief in Armenia.
He says, in a
letter to the Near F.ast R elief:
"O f all the heart-breaking distress
that exists In other countries, 1 be-
heve that Ibe Near East situation
should most appeal to our charitable
people. There aro many thousands
vf helpless orphan*— children o f
Christian parents in a Moslem land,
who must be helped by our people
If they are to survive.

menians have preserved their race,
their religion anil their language un­
der conditions o f distress for over a.
thousand years.
They are worthy
Qf n better fate titan to parish, and
i believe that will be their fate with­
out substantial financial and moral
support from the good people o f our
country.
