T H E DALLAS CAM E.
The trip to D allas on S atu rd ay . April
15, by our first baseball team was m ade
under the m ost pleasant circum stances
possible. To begin w ith, the day was
perfect, and the journey of 16 m iles from
Salem was m ade in three two-seated
carriages, each containing four people.
Leaving Salem at 9 a. m. sh arp we
arrived in D allas as the noon w histles
blew —ju st in tim e for d in n e r a t the Gail
Hotel, which is the leading hostelry in
the city.
After a very bountiful meal we chan g
ed to our new uniform s and every one wa«
proud of his appearance. In fact, our
hoys made a favorable im pression hv
th eir appearance, so we heard the people
say.
After a short p relim in ary practice on
a very slow diam ond the game was ca ll
ed by the um pire who proved him self a.
very capable official. There were some
very close decisions in which it appeared
the decision was ag ain st us, but the
in ten tio n of the official was never ques
tioned, as he was above suspecion of
being p artia l
Our b attin g was lam entably weak, as
a team , and we should devote our prac-
tiine to hatting.
By learning how to hit the ball in a
n atu ral, easy m an n er we can win every
game. If we only had a team th a t
would follow the exam ple of Kross
Clem ents or P ra tt when hatting! The
loss of the gam e is no disgrace, but we
m ust not lo.-e any gam e only by the
superior m erits of our opponents.' The
rcore was 5 to 3 in fav r of Dallas.
