PANAMA CANAL.

KING'S INCOME.
It should prove of interest to our stu
dents generally to learn the various
items which go to make up the salary of
the King of England. The following
sums were allowed the late king, but we
understand King George, who recently
succeeded to the. , throne, , has asked for
an increase:
Under the arrangements made by par
liament in.. 19,01, when Edward Vir suc
ceeded to the throne he and his family
received $2,715,000 a year as civil list, or
$210,000 more than Queen Victoria, savs
the Indianapolis Star. The sum was al tot
ed thus: Civil list, to the King and Queen,
$2,350,000; annuity to the Prince of
Wale, $100,000; annuity to the Princess
of Wales $50,000; provision for the King's
daughter $90,000; allowing to Queen
Victoria's serva-ts, $125,000; total, $2.

Alexandra in the event of her serving
King Edward should receive $350,000

was allotted: Their majesties' privy
