THE C HEM AW A AMERICAN -7 THE REL'AY RACE. (Clippings From the Oregonian.) Y. M. C. A. READY FOR INDIANS With 14 out of 15 runners finishing within two minutes of each other, the try-out held by the Portland Y. M. C. A. to pick the team which competes against the Chemawa Indian school in the an nual Portland Salem relay race on May og was held yesterday over a four-mile course through the city streets. The runners left sixth and Yamhill streets about 6:30 o'clock and the first man in the race finished 24 minutes and 36 seconds. All of the runners were comparatively fresh. The local relay team expects to give the Indians a hard race this year. Heretofore the Indians have won each race. Under the leader ship of Fred Newell the Y. M. C. A. hoys have been training for nearly two months. The order in which the runners finish ed follows: 1, McDonald; 2, Schwabauer; 3, Vanderlip; 4, Brandaller; 5, Perkins; G, Laasch; 7, Messeager; 8, Kurtz; 9, Paulson; 10, Newell (Captain); 11, Peter son; 12, Jones; 13, Gill; 14, Solum. CHEMAWA INDIANS SPEEDY. The Chemawa Indian school is devel oping some fast runners for the Salem Portland annual relay race, which will he run with the Portland Y M. C A. on May 28. Eight of last year's team are out for honors, while many new speedy Imlims have entered the contest. So close has become the competition that the Indians, who ran last year; are on their mettle and will have to improve in order to secure places on this year's team. A try-out is held every Monday even ing, the first 18 to cross the finish line being placed at the training table. , The final try-out will be held on Saturday, May 21, when the team to represent the school will be selected. Thus far in the preliminary try-outs, there has been less than a minute in difference in the time' between the first and the 18th man and only a few seconds between the sixth and the 15th man to finish. Of tne old runners, Haight, Smoker, Clark. Brown, Frank Dau, Louie Dan, Souvigner and John have been in the tryouts. while Bearchild, Kitus Jim, Olney, James Finley and Ed. Finley are most promising of the new runners. The Indians realize the Y. M. C. A. runners are putting forth au extra ef fort to win and thus wipe out the three previous defeats. With the dogged de termination of their race the Indians are training this year as never before and the prospects now are that a new Salem-Portland record will be set this year. CHEMaWA VS WILLAMETTE. Last Friday afternoon our boys admin istered a second defeat to Willamette Uni versity on their grounds at Salem by a score of 5 to 4. Haight was in the box, for Chemawa and blanked Willamette for the first seven innings while we tal lied three runs. In the seventh Haight was a little wild and walked twomen, but he did not lose his head and pulled him self out of the hole. In the eight Graham went in, was wild and the vVillamettes tallied four runs. In the ninth by hit ting the ball we tallied a run, tying the score. Teabo went in in the ninth and pitched to the end of the game which came in the tenth inning when with one man out another Chemawan crossed the home plate. Umpire, Hamilton of Salem.
