THE EXCRLSIORS.
Ihe societies will soon be disbanded
for the season and we will be looking
forward to another year. The Excelsior
Club is proud of its record for the year
1910. It has been, beyond doubt, the
leading society this year and when oth
ers, seemed on the verge of total anni
hilation, by the lack of interest, the Ex
celsiors were sailing on smooth waters.
The members were always interested in
the programs that were posted and many
pleasant evenings were spent m hear
ing debates and mock trials, and in the
transaction of the business necessary for
a successful society.
Our meetings on several occasions
were hon rid by the presence of the Re
liance Soicety, who, with their Critic,
spent the evening with us and who were
generous in their praise of the manner
in which we conducted our work. In
our contests with our worthy neighbors
we have played even, winning one and
losing one. We are proud of our record.
Our failures we construe as our successes
for the year to come.
The Excelsiors were the originators (at
Chemawa) of the plan for the losing team
of a public debate to forfeit its colors to
their opponents and such being the case
we surely know how and when to do
the honors, rest assured that the ' name
"Excelsior" still stands for good sport
and that we will deliver the goods in due
season. Below we give a few facts relat
ing to the Excelsior record. Out of a
total number of 25 meeting nights, to
date, we have held 18 meetings. Seven
evenings taken up by other programs.

WILLAMETTE VALLEY.
During his visit, James J, Hill ha
reminded forgetful Portland of one fact
that she ought to keep in mind. After
his day's dash into the Willamette Val
ley Wednesday he said: "I never real,
ized untiltoday where Portland got her
riches from." He added here "are two or
three million acres that are unsurpassed
in the world for climate and soil." Port

PORTLAND WORKING HARD.
Try-outs for the relay team which will
meet the Lhemawa. Indian School team
in the annual Salem-Poi tland relay race
will be held next Saturday at the Y. M.
C. A. The race will be held on Saturday,
May 28. Under the leadership of Captain
Fred Newell, about 25 runne,s are out
every Monday, Wednesday and Friday
nights about 6:30 o'clock: They run
about three miles over the residence
streets. Next Saturday's try-out will be
held over the Macleay Park course,
which is about a five-mile run Oregon
ian. We understand they have a regular
traning table and since! the above "was
