Haskell has the best Commercial De
partment in the Service Chemavva has
the best Industrial Department. Some
One has suggested that Chemawa's Aca
demic graduates who desire a Commercia l
course should go to Haskell and those
of Haskell desiring a thorough industrial
training should come to Chemawa.
" The best Way to learn to swim is to
jump in and strike out. They say that
the Indians in. the old days used to
throw their children in the streams and
make them swim out. The best way to
do anything is to jump right in and
tackle it fearles-ly.
We wish to call attention to the article
of our issue of November 5, concerning
the pupils and employes who borrow the
Chemawa meriean Judging from the
150 new subscribers from the students
and 2 from the employes since that issue,
it app'-ats that the pupils show more
school spirit than the employes.

PRESIDENT'S THANKSGIVING
r PROCLAMATION.
Washington, Nov. 15 Thursday,
November 25, was today officially pro
claimed by President Taft as Thanks
giving day. The President's proclama
tion follows:
' By the President of the United States
of America A Proclamation:
'The season of the year has returned
when, in accordance . with the reverent
custom established by bur forefathers,
the people of the United States are wont
to meet in their -usual places of wor
ship on a day of thanksgiving, appoint
ed by the Civil Magistrate to return
thanks to God for the great mercies and
benefits which they, have enjoyed.
; "During the past year we have been
highly blessed. No great calamities of
flood or tempest or epidemic of sickness
has befallen. We have lived in quiet
ness undisturbed by wars or rumors of
wars. Peace ai-d plenty of bounteous
crops and of great industrial production
animate a cheerful and resolute people
to all the renewed energies of beneficent
industry and material and moral pro
gress. It is altogether fitting that we
should humbly and gratefully acknow
ledge the divine source of these blessings.
" Therefore, I hereby appoint Thurs
day, the 25th day of November, as a day
of general thanksgiving, and I call up
on the people on that day, laying aside
their usual vocations, to repair to their
churches and unite in services of praise
and thanksgiving to Almighty God.
'Tn witness whereof I have . hereunto
set my hand apd caused the seal of the
United States to be affixed.
"Done at the City of Washington, this
fifteenth day of November, in the year
of our Lord one thousand nine hundred
and nine, and of the independene of the
United States the one hundred and
