The hop picking in Oregon and Wash
ington ought to be the same help to .the
Siletz, Grande Ronde, Warm Spring,
Yakima. Umatilla, Neah Bay, Puyallup
and other Indians in the Stat es named as

that in many cases they are more of a
detriment than a help to the Indians
named. In some cases the hop yards are
simply places for the people to congre
grate and have a carouse. This is great
ly to their moral detriment. If is sincere
ly to be hoped that the Agency Indians
of the north west can have and superision
that these pitfalls will be removed from
under him. The Independence hop yards
has done more than any one thing to
deband and degrade the Indians of Sile
tz and Grande Ronde.
The Mandolin Club sustained a severe
loss when their instructor Mr Ruthyn
Turney resigned his position at the
School. Some one said ''Guess the
Mandolin Club will disband." Oh no
the girls, will stick together and on time
to improve and they will soon have an
other head Chemawa never takes any
steps backward. "Onward and upward"
is the motto, of the school as it was of
a recent graduating class.
The school had a very pleasant visit
from Chas. E. Dagenett who is . in the
northwest looking after the interests of
the working Indians of this section and
how he can better their condition. In
this issue we reprint an article from the
Indian Craftsman which shows the work
Mr. Dagenett has done for his people.
By the time this paper reaches ouv
readers school will have opened and an
ambitious body of boys and girls will
have started another year's educational
work, many who were heme on vacation
have returned and every train brings in
old and some new pupil.
THE. VACATIONERS.
Our vacationers have all returned and
have started another years' work.
Mrs. Campbell spent her vacation with
her son Donald and his wife in Spokane.
Mr. Campbell went as far as Seattle to
meet her and they did the fair together.
Mr. Campbell, Mr. Teabo, Mr. Swa
boda and Dr. Lieu ra nee accompanied the
band and ball team to the Humboldt
County Fair in California. .
Miss lioyer accompanied by her moth
er spent a part of her leave at the Fair
and took a number of side trips in the
Hound country.
Mrs. Woods spent her vacation at New
port by the sea. Her daughter, Miss Eva,
enjoyed the outing with her,
Mrs. Dohorty spent her vacation
rusticating in the vicinity of Chemawa.
Miss Bender spent a week at the
coast visiting friends
Mrs. Bullard visited relatives in Cali
fornia. Miss Brown spent her vacation in
Salem.
